A plot twist or unexpected turn of events. On the one hand, this can give the game a real thrill, when it already seems that everything is completely clear and suddenly. BOOM. Everything is different. But it can also turn into a complete disaster. A twist that doesn’t make sense, is contrived, or completely contradicts what the game was actually trying to do all along. Today we will look at exactly those twists and turns that fans would most like to forget about. Oh, and be warned, the video will contain a lot of spoilers… just in case.

There can be no doubt that the first Super Mario Bros. was a huge success in 1985, so the second part was not long in coming. A year later, a potential number two was released in Japan, but it was more or less a much more difficult number one. This part, therefore, remained known only in Japan, while the other part, known in America and Europe, it was not published until 1988.
The fact that the second part turned out to be just as successful is evidenced not only by sales, but also by fan reviews. Perhaps also because it is more of an updated platformer for the Western market, Doki Doki Panic, released a year earlier in Japan. A great game in every way… until the very end. There’s probably no worse plot twist than “and suddenly the main character woke up and discovered that it was just a dream”. And guess how Super Mario Bros 2 ends? Yes, probably the worst cliché that the developers could come up with, because how else can you say that in fact it was all about nothing.
