Survival Horror is experiencing something of a second renaissance; paradoxically, looking at herself in the past and perfectly copying everything she once did well. Thus, CAPCOM followed its golden path and has been producing the Resident Evil series for the past few years. with exceptions one amazing game after another. Silent Hill we will also see a revival in the upcoming remake of the legendary duo. And he comes back to it all the progenitor of all these games: Alone in the Dark. Theoretically, in 23 years, except for the two average and below average parts. This series, which marked the birth of the survival horror genre as we know it today and served as the main inspiration for the development of Resident Evil, had a very difficult time. And it remains to be seen whether not only the characters in the game, but also the Swedish Pieces Interactive will be able to break the destructive curse.
The story of the new Alone in the Dark begins from the original 1992 work and in a certain way transforms key events into a modern form. A little figuratively speaking, we find ourselves in the southern United States in the 1920s. And if you choose, be in the role of a tougher and somewhat stereotypically portrayed detective. Edward Carnbyor worried nieces Emily Hartwood, who is worried about her uncle Jeremy. Everything revolves around the territory of Derceto’s headquarters. However, this is where the greatest similarities end.
Derceto has become a kind of mental hospital under the direction of Dr. Gray, populated by a handful of colorful characters. Among others is Grace Saunders, who will certainly be well known to fans of the second part of the series. On the contrary, this time Emily is trying not to hide the letter in the piano in the attic, but to drag out her poor and crazy uncle and take him north with her. But, as you will soon find out, things won’t be that simple. Uncle Jeremy is missing. A simple task becomes more complicated, and the search for a missing person very soon develops into something more. However, Alone in the Dark is not pure horror in the modern sense of the word, and like the original, the new reimagining is strongly based on Lovecraft’s psychological and cosmic horror, as well as themes of cultism and symbolism.. Although, to be honest, I wouldn’t mind if she went even more radical in this regard.
However, I don’t want to reveal more. The gradual thematic transition is definitely best experienced and discovered by playing it yourself. However, I have to think a little about the fact that there is a sense of urgency in the third act and that a certain change of genre, especially at the very end, seems strangely abrupt. This can be alleviated to a certain extent by carefully reading the notes, letters and other reading material scattered around that will expand your understanding of the world and… the rest, if I do say so myself.
Continuous exploration is what Alone in the Dark relies on most. Within approx. six hour campaigns – at least that’s how long the first playthrough took me – you carefully go through all the rooms of Derset, as well as other locations that you find yourself in regularly. There are city streets, swamps and even a seemingly idyllic library. The variety of environments in the game is undeniable, and each one is depicted with pleasing detail and uniqueness. However, don’t expect to spend more than “a few minutes” on them. Some locations are relatively short and, unfortunately, quite linear. This is also reflected in the second pillar of the gameplay – puzzles.
Sorry, I would put you in the segment ridiculously simple and about half of them repeat the same principle. They are funny and coming up with a solution is fun. And some may also appreciate the fact that there is nothing super complicated that could delay you for tens of minutes. However, the developers managed to significantly push the saw both in quality and quantity, as well as in complexity. In particular, this can be at least partially improved by disabling modern tooltips. Instead of having a clear description of where to go and what to do, you will have to deduce your next trip from context and current events. Even in this case there is nothing complicated. Especially again due to the generally small locations. I would like to give an example of the small port of New Orleans. In it we have to get to one warehouse, where we can get through the sewer. However, the path to them is blocked by a brothel in a network held by a crane. We need the key to the faucet, which we find hanging inside one and only one building. After finding the key, nothing keeps us from the warehouse. In it we find a safe and in it a letter with a fairly clear hint for the combination. And it’s all. The entire section is completed after finding one key and reading one letter. It’s a shame because the rest of the game works in a similar way.
