AMD’s upscaling will now use artificial intelligence

While the DLSS and XMX versions of XeSS use machine learning and operate using Tensor/Matrix cores in the graphics card, AMD has so far relied on classic non-AI algorithms for its scaling technologies. But this must change, AMD CTO Mark Papermaster hinted at this in an interview with the YouTube channel No Priors, Videocardz magazine reports.

“We’re enabling AI to scale our gaming devices, and 2024 will be the year of truly massive adoption.” Papermaster speaks shortly after calling the entire year a very important one from an artificial intelligence perspective. This is a fairly vague statement, but since Papermaster specifically mentions a gaming device, we can expect him to be talking about game upscaling and therefore possibly a new version of FSR.

So far we don’t know any details or when the technology can be fully implemented. Either way, the use of AI could mean better image quality, an aspect where AMD’s scaling still lags.

Interestingly, by the way, we recently wrote about the alleged AI upscaling from Sony, which is being prepared for the PlayStation 5 Pro. It is not entirely possible that this is the same technology that both companies worked on together, or that it is based on each other. But we can only guess.
