A few days ago we wrote here that Microsoft was going to introduce a technology called DirectSR at GDC. However, we have already mentioned that it is not entirely clear whether this is truly a separate upscaling technology. Microsoft has finally announced DirectSR in its entirety, so we can say that it’s not actually true.
DirectSR won’t compete with Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR, or Intel’s XeSS, but is an API designed to make all of these technologies (and many more) easier to implement. In principle, it should be enough to implement one code that will already take care of activating the various upscalers. DirectSR should be in preview in the Agility SDK soon.
This is not a new idea. Previously, Nvidia offered its open source solution Streamline, which works on a similar principle. But it only supports DLSS and XeSS since AMD refused to join. Thus, DirectSR should offer broader support for various technologies.
