The Finnish studio Remedy has a number of titles under its belt, but with the rights to individual brands, things are somewhat more complicated. The popular Max Payne series was sold to Rockstar after the release of the second part, the rights to publish Alan Wake belonged to Microsoft for a long time (and Remedy had to buy them), Quantum Break still belongs to Microsoft. The rights to the Control brand were previously owned by 505 Games, but Remedy continues to buy them back after AW, as the company announced today that Control is now completely in their hands.
Thus, Remedy controls the publication, distribution, marketing and generally all rights related to Control, as well as other games based on this brand, namely the co-op multiplayer codenamed Condor and a full-fledged sequel called Control 2. The Finnish studio paid for a purchase of approximately 17 million euros, which should have been similar to the amount that 505 Games has invested in the two aforementioned projects so far.
There is no immediate effect yet. During the transition period, Control will continue to publish 505 Games until the end of the year. What will happen next remains to be seen. The press release states that the studio is considering the possibility of self-publishing and a new partner for projects based on this brand.
“Condor and Control 2 have progressed well in recent months, and we expect these projects to enter their next development phase in the first half of 2024,” he said. says Remedy CEO Tero Virtala about the future of the brand. “Development of Condor and Control 2 will continue as normal while we consider the best publishing, distribution and financial model for these projects.”
As we say in the press release, we are exploring options for Condor and Control 2 when it comes to publishing and financing partners for these games.
