Review: The second Dune is the more mature, bolder and more action-oriented sister of the first.

We would like to thank the Czech representative office of Xbox for the opportunity to attend the pre-premiere of the film.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator you can now sit in an ornithopter so typical of the planet Arrakis.

The second part of Dune from the Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2042, Arrival) is not accidentally compared to The Two Towers, the middle part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The predecessors of both films were more long exposition of their series than avant-garde films with a coherent plot. And in both cases, the sequel responsibly develops not only the plot, but also a number of characters who have not yet been given much space. And even this time we will have to wait for the completion of the trilogy, because even the second part of Dune at the end clearly tells us that the most important thing is yet to come. But don’t worry about being deprived of something on the silver screen. Dune: Part Two is action-packed, action-packed, complex and mature.

I see one fundamental difference between Dune and The Lord of the Rings – a similar large-scale cinematic cultural event of its generation. More precisely, between Dune and most mainstream blockbusters with similar response and attendance. While much of it is fairly straightforward to read, be it the definition of good and evil, the direction of characters’ actions, or their motivations, Dune is full of surprises. These don’t have to be big twists, but I’ve often been surprised at how far this or that denominator can go in the galactic political game. Certainly nothing groundbreaking for book readers, but a welcome change for relative newcomer to the Frank Herbert universe.

Rebecca Ferguson excels in casting Paul’s mother Jessica as the harbinger of the coming savior.

Not to mention the fact that the acting show of representatives of these characters continues. Timothee Chalamet has once again taken on the lead role with grace, but as I mentioned, this time the space will be given to a whole constellation of characters. Rebecca Ferguson excellently promotes Paul’s mother Jessica to the position of herald of the coming of the savior, Stellan Skarsgård it also shows Baron Harkonnen’s weak side and also takes up a significant portion of the footage. Zendaya like Chani. This is a key piece of the puzzle of the battle for the planet Arrakis and who the protagonist is and will become.

But even the newcomers did not disappoint. Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) will play an interesting role as a link between the Emperor and the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. Psychopathic villain Fade (Austin Butler) does not surprise in any way, but fulfills all the reasons for which it appears in the story. And we could go on. At the same time, we can expect at least some of the less busy actors to get more space in the sequel, following Zendaya’s example. Yes, I’m looking at you, Anya Taylor-Joy…

In the end, however, it is primarily a story of Paul that will come to a certain turning point and the end of one of its phases. This is a nice change compared to the first part. True, the main character eventually changed and found a new path for himself, but here, due to circumstances, everything seems more urgent, burdensome and final. There is no way back.

The second “Dune” is eleven minutes longer than the first part. And it’s quite dynamic, it’s a big change. What’s the matter, the action is high quality and fun, but in my opinion, the quieter passages, dialogue, desert views, political intrigue or mysterious rituals still work best. As a fan of Villeneuve’s style, in the end there was perhaps a little more action than I would have liked at some points.

It seems to me that the creators found solid ground under their feet and, unlike the first one, were not afraid to experiment a little more.

However, the action scene stood out to me the most out of the entire movie. Remember the black and white footage from the trailers? So that’s it. The scene is artistically, choreographically and conceptually perfect. In the end, she is brave, just like the rest of the film. It seems to me that the creators found solid ground under their feet and, unlike the first one, were not afraid to experiment a little more. In addition to the visual aspect, which works even more prominently with the colors, humor has been added, but it is not intrusive and gives a pleasant breath in the usually tense atmosphere. The music from the pen complements this perfectly. Hans Zimmerwhich skimps on the main motif but doesn’t skimp on the impressive vocals and booming orchestral sound.

The second part of Dune is such an older sister of the first part. He is more experienced and is not afraid to take risks. What her brother does well, she does even better. Sometimes she goes a little overboard and forgets herself in a fight or sword fight, but then she puts on such a show that you instantly forgive her any shortcomings. It’s no secret that Denis Villeneuve plans to give birth to a third party. Messiah it is he who will bring Dune to the end.
