There is not even a month left before the traditional GDC event, which will bring together game developers from all over the world. Large companies will also not be left without attention, and in particular Microsoft has now announced very interesting news. We learned that on March 21st he will give a presentation on news about DirectX. Among other things, new DirectSR technology should be introduced.
As the name suggests, this is Direct Super Resolution, that is, a scaling solution. However, it is not yet entirely clear whether this will be another competition for DLSS (Nvidia), FSR (AMD), XeSS (Intel) or TSR (Unreal Engine). There is only a brief description that is not entirely clear:
“Microsoft will preview DirectSR, making it easier than ever to scale super resolution support on Windows devices.”
This description may sound like it’s just a technology that will make it easier for developers to implement existing upscalers, although it shouldn’t be anything difficult, especially in existing engines. On the other hand, the name itself rather indicates that this will be a new scaling technology.
And this is probably not the only one, the Auto SR feature was leaked a few weeks ago, but it will work at the operating system level and does not need to be implemented in games. You can probably use it for any game, but at the cost of significantly worse image quality (it doesn’t have access to game data and everything, including the UI and other elements, is scaled). It is unclear whether this technology is somehow related. So we will have to wait for the official unveiling.
Finally, I’d like to remind you that just yesterday we also wrote about Sony’s supposed AI scaling that’s set to arrive with the release of the PS5 Pro console.
