70 dollars or 80 euros may soon become the norm for Capcom. The publisher of the Resident Evil and Monster Hunter series is considering raising prices for other games. This is due to development costs, which are rising throughout the video game industry. Capcom, however, doesn’t want to rush things and will make a decision based on consumer reaction.
“Dragon’s Dogma 2, scheduled for release this fiscal year, will cost $69.99. Development costs are rising across the industry and we are considering a price review. Ultimately, we intend to be smart about pricing our games and solicit user feedback.” said a Capcom representative when asked about the price of Dragon’s Dogma 2, which Capcom expects to sell in the millions.
Capcom’s president already spoke about rising prices last year at the Tokyo Game Show, where he said that game prices were too low and Price gouging is a healthy choice for the industry. He also pointed to rising wages for workers.
“Development costs are about a hundred times higher than in the Famicom era, but software prices have not increased as much” Tsujimoto added. He also believes that quality games will sell even after price increases. With this in mind, games costing 70/80 euros look like they will soon become the norm for Capcom as well.
