Last summer, a completely new fantasy first-person shooter was released, which was supposed to provide fierce battles in the style of Call of Duty. The only difference is that she exchanged weapons for amulets. On Immortals of Aveuma however, it was quickly forgotten, the game did not sell, and the head of the Ascendant studio a few months later started talking about underestimation of competition. The former developer sees the problem differently.
Prior to founding Ascendant Studios, Bret Robbins served as creative director for Call of Duty at Sledgehammer Games. According to a former employee, he had very big ambitions and wanted to break through with a single-player AAA shooter. But that was in today’s market terrible ideabecause the game lacks modern elements.
One sees the problem at the very beginning, when Robbins and several experienced developers wanted to create a huge single-player game from scratch using Unreal Engine 5, which was still in its infancy at the time. Development costs were expected to be around $85 million, with Electronic Arts investing an additional $40 million for marketing and distribution. But $125 million was not returned.
“The end result was a bloated, repetitive campaign that ended up being too long.” one former creator said in an interview with IGN. An anonymous person who remains an Ascendant Studios employee confirmed that no one bought the game. It is assumed that there were two reasons: it did not fit into popular trends and it was a new brand.
“It’s not a sequel or a remake, it doesn’t take 400 hours, there are no microtransactions, there is no mindless open world grinding. While not everyone liked the game, it received pretty good reviews, with 74 on OpenCritic so far and mostly positive on Steam. And no one bought it.” he added. Approximately 45% of the Ascendant Studios team suffered financial failure.
Immortals of Aveum was released on August 22, 2023 by Electronic Arts for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The malfunction can also be explained by the terrible technical condition and disliked content. The average rating for reviews was 70%. We wrote about the game:
“There was definitely more to Immortals of Aveum, but it was still a good game. Nothing special, but nothing offensive, but on the contrary, the humor and audio site did their best. It’s really a shame for the absolutely terrible technical state of the PC, where the game has problems even on a more powerful set, but when will the developers fix this? It will actually be a good game to unwind.”
