Impressions from the game Indica – Zing

Who is Indica? What is Indica? How and on what will Indica be played? For God’s sake will? We asked ourselves these and many other questions when we watched the announcement trailer (or one of the other trailers) for the game Odd Meter, published by the famous Polish team 11 Bit Studios. As part of the Steam Next Fest, you can try a demo version, which does not answer all questions, but gives a fairly specific idea of the game.

We learn the least about the story from the demo. On the one hand, because of the length of the demo, the developers talk about half an hour, I spent less than an hour on it, and on the other hand, because we are thrown into the action without knowing previous events. In the game part, in addition to Indica, there is another character with whom the titular nun conducts dialogues, and an inner voice that accompanies and seduces the main character. You may notice some bits of the story, but there’s nothing to judge.

But as for the dialogues, not only their level, but also the overall presentation of the game, from my point of view, is the most attractive thing so far. The graphics are at a very high level by the standards of a small studio, and when something is lacking, it is compensated by style and atmosphere. This is also helped by the music, which is what we could hear in the trailer. Sympathetically strange.

But since Indika remains something of a mystery in terms of its narrative and motivations—the Russian developers emigrated from the country and seek to criticize the Russian Orthodox Church with a current events twist—the gameplay revealed quite a bit in the demo. This game can easily be defined as a third-person adventure game based on puzzle solving and exploration.

Discovering objects, texts, or altars earns experience points in addition to the knowledge acquired. Indica will rise, in the demo we will pick it up at level nine. The question is what would be the point of leveling up, because at several intermediate levels I chose perks only to gain additional experience. Perhaps some RPG element will appear with the new level…

The puzzles are environmental and fairly standard. I didn’t find them too difficult, but I didn’t find them stupid either. In the demo version we are faced with moving stairs or boxes. I was also given the opportunity to give orders to my companion. The environment intuitively tells you several times where to go and how to move so that the journey forward is successful. In one passage we will see an impressive and effective transformation of the environment that we can directly control and which is again part of the environmental puzzle.

Impressions from the demo were almost exclusively positive. I look forward to the Indica more than before playing the selected sample.

In the end, he also runs away from danger, and here I will allow myself a little criticism. Firstly, choosing an escape route requires trial and error, and secondly, the controls aren’t flexible enough to make the whole experience enjoyable.

However, impressions from the demo were almost exclusively positive. Indica still attracts with its theme, presentation, plot and atmosphere and again gives a fairly good idea of the gameplay. It still holds some mysteries, and the full game will likely reveal a lot more, but I can now confidently say that I’m looking forward to it more than I was before playing the demo I chose. In addition, the title should arrive soon, scheduled for the first quarter of this year.
