Counter-Strike has long been one of the most popular games in the world. However, over the years, this FPS has been plagued by an often overlooked problem that is nothing more than gambling, the support of which is actively sought by more than one influential person. But sometimes there are those who refuse, as a new article from The Guardian shows. A good example of such a person is a talented Counter-Strike player. Jeff with over 750 thousand subscribers. One fine day, he also received an offer that he could quickly earn more than 280 thousand dollars. However, unlike others, he refused and instead decided to actively expose to the world that his beloved game was suffering from a fundamental malaise.
As a result, he himself is not particularly bothered by the presence of cosmetic modifications to weapons or boxes from which things drop. He is able to accept these things, but what he can no longer try is gambling related to these factors. He understands that young players are getting their first opportunity to experience the joy of gambling through cosmetic gambling and it just doesn’t feel right to him. According to him, millions of dollars circulate on various niche sites over which there is little control.
Jeff himself created a documentary, the purpose of which was to show the world how the entire business around FPS Counter-Strike works. The community supported his move, but he also received threats from a number of places. If you’re wondering what effect gambling might have on cosmetics, the question was explored last year by Dr Heather Wardle of the University of Glasgow, who found that engaging in this relatively subtle form of gambling can lead to the development of a gambling addiction. Some governments are aware of this and therefore block the IP addresses of certain gaming sites.
While Valve itself does not condone gambling, it has not taken any proactive approach to the whole situation, as some believe it is simply profiting from the market to a certain extent. However, the world is slowly changing. So we’ll see if it will be possible to reduce this problematic issue over time, at least in the sphere of individual states.
Some things move!
