Microsoft’s value recently exceeded 3 trillion dollars, which was previously only carried out by Apple. For the first quarter of 2024, Microsoft recorded income $57 trillion.. Before today’s layoffs, Microsoft employed 22,000 people in game development. Today, approximately 8 percent of the workforce has been laid off.

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, said in a memo to employees obtained by US server IGN that this year they are committed to aligning a strategy and balanced cost structure to support all of their growing activities.

“As part of this process, we have made the painful decision to reduce our gaming sector workforce by approximately 1,900 roles from our 22,000 team. Together with the leadership of the gaming team, we strive to make this process as thoughtful as possible. The people directly affected by this layoff have played an important role in the success of the Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax and Xbox teams and should be proud of all they have accomplished here. We are grateful to them for the creativity, passion and commitment they brought to our games, players and colleagues.” Spencer stated.

Microsoft will provide full support to all victims, including severance pay in accordance with local labor laws.

“Looking to the future, we will continue to invest in areas that will grow our business and support our strategy of bringing more games to more players around the world. While this is a difficult time for our team, I have, as always, faith in your ability to create and develop games, stories and worlds that bring players together.” Spencer added.

At this time, we do not know what impact layoffs will have on upcoming projects. This is only confirmed blizzard survival cancellation, which was codenamed Project Odyssey. Development was led by former Far Cry head Dan Hay, who left Ubisoft after more than a decade at the end of 2021 to join Blizzard. It is expected that some of the developers will be transferred to one of several promising new projects that Blizzard is in the early stages of development.

“Today’s actions impact multiple teams at Blizzard, including development teams, shared services organizations, and corporate functions.” said Matt Booty, head of games research at Microsoft. “As part of this effort, Blizzard is winding down its survival project and moving some of the people working on it to one of several promising new projects that Blizzard has in early development.”
