Ara: History Untold takes a closer look at the gameplay

Already in the summer of 2022, Oxide Games, the studio behind Ashes of the Singularity, presented the turn-based strategy 4X Ara: History Untold. Ara is another Civilization contender, but it has some unique features. The developers presented them in more detail at today’s Xbox Developer Direct event.

The game primarily promises variety in approach. Because you gradually collect the prestige points needed to win, there are no predetermined conditions for victory. Of course, each nation will be led by a certain leader, but this does not have to be the person who actually led the country. Among the selected ones you will find, for example, the Chinese philosopher Confucius or the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.

The technological system is also interesting. Unlike the classic one in Civilization and other games where we find a tree, here we always have to choose one technology from a random offer, the rest are put “back to the deck”. When it finally ends, you can either move on to the next era (but this leaves unknown technologies behind and limits your options for the future), or you can take another turn.

Another interesting mechanic is, for example, the crafting system, which you can use for various events and buildings. Also specific are the moves themselves, which happen simultaneously (unlike most moving strategies), so the developers wanted to minimize the time during which the player simply watches and cannot do anything. At the same time, the creators wanted the world (which is randomly generated) to feel truly alive, so you will find many different biomes, plants and animals in it. Some animals you can farm, but others are wild and may even attack your villagers.

For now, you can add the game to your wishlist on Steam. At the same time, you can read our impressions of last year’s Gamescom, where the game was presented.
