Top 3 horror games of 2023 according to Spite.cz editors

In addition to voting across multiple editorial boards for this year’s top ten games (the results of which we’ll announce on December 20), our editorial team also discussed a narrower ranking of the best gaming remakes of 2023, as the revival of old games in new guises increases noticeably every year. As well-informed players probably guess, there was a very close fight for first place between the two favorites, but even third place was not easy to choose from among all the successful contenders this year.

1st place: Dead Space

Our review is here.

One of the main reasons we ended up returning aboard the “abandoned” spaceship USG Ishimura in the first place is the fact that absolutely every new improvement and change in the remake goes in the direction of enhancing what’s most important to the horror experience. game: its “plausibility” and creepiness.

Primarily, it’s an exchange of save screens to connect the entire ship through a labyrinth of corridors with random enemy attacks that always keep you on your toes. But, of course, this also includes a very thorough improvement in graphics and brilliant sound, and perhaps an increase in the humanity and vulnerability of the main character by turning the mute protagonist into a normally sociable and sympathetic person.

Without exception, all new improvements and changes in the remake are aimed at strengthening the most important thing for a horror game.

Perhaps the only downside to the remake is the question of how much it was actually needed: this is one of those games whose original version (released in 2008) still looks and plays great after all these years. However, there is no doubt that the audiovisual remake has gone quite a bit further, and besides: all the improvements really fit into the game and pleasantly enriched it (perhaps with the exception of Nicole’s appearance). If you’ve never played the original game or series, there’s no doubt that the remake was the best way to fix that.

2nd place: Resident Evil 4

Our review is here.

It goes without saying that this film was loved by many, and if it’s at the top of your personal list of remakes this year, we certainly completely understand that. Resident Evil 4 was already more than just a survival horror game when the original version of the game was released (2005) – it was a great “popcorn” ride, comparable in pace and variety to blockbusters like the game. Unexplored.

The remake retains that great storytelling and tone of the original game, but vastly improves the experience with amazingly improved graphics that go as far as photorealism in many places. It also makes the game noticeably scarier, and its atmosphere is completely disarming. The creators supported this effect with modified and added scenes, where, for example, the opening intro sets a much more brutal tone for the entire game.

The remake retains the excellent storytelling and tone of the original game, but greatly improves the experience with surprisingly improved graphics.

There is a gap of several years between the original version of the game and the remake than was the case with Dead Space, making the existence of a remake easier to justify. What we are not entirely sure of is the preservation of the sometimes very straightforward humor, full of inexpressive jokes, which, although inherent in the original game, conflict somewhat incongruously with the more realistic, creepy remake and its atmosphere. But that doesn’t change the fact that this is not only a great remake, but also one of the funniest games this year.

3rd place: Systemic Shock

Our review is here.

System Shock is not as accessible a game as the previous two, and may disappoint younger players who are not used to the “strict old school design”. Our respect for the creators of the remake is especially true since they were not afraid of this factor and revived this old (1994) legendary game in a relatively uncompromising form, which, among other things, retained the feeling of sometimes even desperate wandering. through the labyrinthine space station.

This will make every step you take on board the Citadel space station much more meaningful, and the experience of exploring it will be so powerful. The remake helps this, among other things, with absolutely magnificent graphics, which on the one hand are truly technically modern and complex, but at the same time very sensitively retains the retro-futuristic charge, thanks to which the game evokes that unique atmosphere of the golden era of fantasy.

This will make your every step aboard the Citadel space station much more meaningful.

This remake is one in a long line of games this year that we fear are falling a bit short of this year’s extremely tight competition. But if you like sci-fi horror and challenging action, you should definitely give it a chance. Just don’t get too upset when SHODAN’s treacherous AI lures you into one of its countless unfair traps, because that’s what it will enjoy the most.

There really haven’t been many remakes this year, and many of them have been very successful. For example, Metroid Prime Remastered was one of our favorites when we ranked it, but of course we also considered Super Mario RPG, Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened or Star Ocean: The Second Story R.

As for other editorial ratings, colleagues from Spite.cz magazine have already named the top three horror games of the year.
