The Witcher has long been one of the brands that are very popular due to their chosen themes. Geralt of Rivia himself is the main face of this universe, but it must be said that it works without him, which is perfectly shown in the board game The Witcher: The Old World, which we will consider in the following paragraphs of our review.

The Witcher: The Old World turns the player into a monster-killing machine.
Yes, even this time the main characters of the entire adventure will be witches. In short, this guild has been present throughout history and has been killing as many monsters as possible throughout its existence. In The Witcher: The Old World, you have more of its branches at your disposal, so in addition to the wolf medallion, there is also a bear gem, a cat piece, a griffin’s head, or a viper’s head. Each of the individual styles will offer the player a slightly different specialization, so if you want to explicitly choose an orientation, there’s nothing stopping you from choosing from five different characters. Personally, as in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, I fell in love with the warrior representing the interests of the Bear school, focused to a certain extent on perseverance.
Once you’ve chosen one of the Witchers, there’s nothing stopping you from gathering your gear and setting out on an adventure into the well-known world you’ve walked through in the shoes of Geralt of Rivia. However, instead of a properly sharpened sword and crossbow, you do not have classic weapons and magical abilities. Instead, you’re given a basic deck of cards to work with as you play The Witcher: The Old World. Almost everything important is predetermined here. The only place where visually very pleasing dice are played is in poker, but this is more of a side activity than something that can truly change the course of the entire game.
Initially, you will use the cards mainly for travel. This also requires visually very beautifully processed maps. There are different symbols here to represent the landscape. However, using them sparingly is a good idea since you also need them for combat. Although The Witcher: The Old World takes place on a large map full of brutally crafted figurines, each fight is a showcase of your deck, in which you have the ability to stack certain cards on top of each other and thus achieve results that can send your opponent to hell on the first turn. But you won’t always succeed. A monster has as many cards as the number of lives it was given at birth. In both cases, the cards essentially represent the amount of life energy that both the caster and the monster possess. The winner is the one who does not run out of cards during the fight.
A real hunter is not afraid of monsters
Witcher vs Monsters can use basic cards, but it is always better to travel around parts of the world and thus expand your basic deck with new interesting pieces that will help you better destroy your minions. Monster Hunters in The Witcher: The Old World start each fight and, like true representatives of their guild, have potions available to strengthen themselves and subsequently gain an advantage over their monster juice in the form of higher attack or damage before the fight. If you manage to succeed and kill your prey, you will receive a trophy for it, which is the key to victory. You will need exactly four pieces to defeat the rest of the hunters.
Some of them can be obtained by hunting. From the very beginning, in the game universe of The Witcher: Old World, under certain conditions, three monsters will appear, representing different categories. The offer is varied. In the case of the Deluxe edition, all hunting items are available on the playing field in the form of visually very beautiful figures. However, they differ relatively little from each other. Each one has a certain number of lives and one special ability. For example, a werewolf will reduce the enemy’s shield level, and Grif will force you to draw fewer cards during battle than usual. However, destroying monsters is only one way to get trophies.
Next comes the hunt for other witchers. More precisely, duels with other players, in which instead of monster cards you use available decks. What’s interesting about The Witcher: The Old World is definitely completing tasks that require a lot from the player, but always reward or punish them appropriately. Some of them you can appreciate immediately, while others represent a long-term perspective. Originality can be counted on in all of them, at least in the first games, but once you have something written down, you need to work with the idea that you will not avoid repetition of tasks. In short, you have to pay to develop your hero. The winner is the one who manages to collect all the trophies first.
Fans of this universe should not miss The Witcher: The Old World.
There has already been one not very successful attempt at adapting the board in this universe. However, this time it seems that the creators have managed to create a truly interesting game that can do a very decent job with what the Northern Kingdom has to offer. The Witcher: The Old World is a board game that takes you back to a time long past when witches still flourished. With the help of cards you will travel here and hunt monsters that can pump you up decently. If you want to be transported to an era long before the arrival of Geralt of Rivia, then this work represents the perfect opportunity. For model lovers, the Deluxe edition is a good choice, because those who like to paint visually interesting monsters will find theirs in it.
