American Sega according to the union’s lawsuit, is trying to weaken its trade union organization Allied Staff Guild Enhancing SEGA (AEGIS) mass dismissal of its members. According to a statement from AEGIS sent to Game Developer, Sega intends to lay off 40% of its employees, or about 80 people out of 200 union members.
Sega intended to notify union representatives in October without prior notice directly at the bargaining table. Just a few hours later, she told employees that some of the localization and quality control work would be transferred to the company’s European and Japanese offices.
“We filed a labor rights lawsuit to point out Sega’s actions. (…) She will not get away with such illegal behavior. We urge her to hire all temporary staff indefinitely and return to the negotiating table in good faith. There is no other fair alternative,” the union said in a statement.
Sega’s unions, which have been in place since this spring, are unprecedented. It is America’s largest interdepartmental gaming union, with approximately 200 members. In addition to the aforementioned quality control and localization, this includes marketing or live service and product development. AEGIS demands, for example, an increase in wages and an end to regular overtime.
