Thirteen long years passed before Remedy Entertainment offered us a way back into the crazy and dark world of writer Alan Wake. The long-awaited second part and at the same time the first attempt of this Finnish studio to taste the delights of Survival Horror is finally here. But many may be surprised in what form. While Alan Wake 2 does some things nearly unbeatable in the gaming business, it doesn’t succeed at everything. But I know very well that you are not here for this nonsense. It is clear to me that you are only interested in one thing: what the hell do you mean it’s not a lake but an ocean?!
I realize that for those of you unfamiliar with the story of the first game, the beginning of this review may sound like I’ve lost my mind. But I will prepare you for this right now. If you want to play this game, I would advise you to get used to it. But in order not to get ahead of ourselves, we must start from the very beginning. The thirteen-year wait after the events of the first part awaited not only us as players. In the fictional American town of Bright Falls, the same amount of time has passed since the mysterious disappearance of the famous best-selling author Alan Wake. Events around him”departure” and a few others, but after such a long time no one cares. Life just had to go on willy-nilly, and this mystery remains unsolved to this day. Perhaps not because eventually no one will try to crack it. Bright -Falls and especially the mysterious Kotel Lake nearby, thanks to which the fictional works of artists can literally come to life. is under close scrutiny by the FBC – Federal Bureau of Control.. That is, a federal agency dealing with supernatural phenomena, the work of which we could see in the previous game from the studio Control.
But after all these long years of a kind of stagnation, something suddenly changes. To the Washington area two FBI agents arrive, to investigate a series of seemingly random murders. In particular, speaking about Agent Saga Andersonone of the two playable characters, and her grumpy partner Alex Casey. The fact that he shares the same name with the main character of Alan’s famous books is probably a complete coincidence, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Everything else will likely bother you. Best case scenario. In short, it’s a story-driven experience that will always be a few steps ahead of you. Whether you know the first part or not. Although you definitely should. While I don’t think it’s necessary to know the story of the first game, especially since you’ll rediscover everything with Saga, I would definitely recommend at least looking for a summary. Some concepts, events, and MacGuffins definitely pay for having context. Because you will need all the help you can get. As soon as Alan Wake himself, the second playable character in the game, actively enters the story, very soon everything turns upside down. And, in addition, it will be inside out, inside out and, of course, also in negative and painted with oil paint.
The initial thought of what the hell is going on is soon replaced by a completely clueless, stupid grin from ear to ear. Any attempt to prematurely reveal the secret of this whole story will soon be frozen and you will simply enjoy all the phantasmagoric events around you. Just the way we like it; how he can do it in Remedy and how he did it already in the first part. Only even stranger and scarier. This time instead of a contrived dark thriller This is pure supernatural horror.Compared to which the first part, frankly speaking, seems like a fairy tale for children.
This is where Remedy took its biggest step forward with the release of the highly anticipated second volume. The story and its narrative is much darker, grittier, more dramatic and visually interesting. And this is also due to the complexity of the storytelling method itself. Although the game follows a classic linear story, there are actually two of them at once. One for each playable character. They are interconnected and influence each other. The Anderson saga revolves around mysterious murders in Bright Falls and the neighboring town of Wateree. Instead, with Alan Wake you’ll be faced with his attempt to escape the Dark Place, or rather the Dark Place as a kind of “not-New York”. What adds to this is the fact that in addition to the beginning and end, you can choose who you will play at certain stages. So you can first go through everything only for Saga, and then for Alan, or vice versa, or for alternative characters. Despite this combination, I must admit that they perfectly follow the events of both lines and I never had a problem, after several hours of playing with one character, to “reach” another and remember what was happening to her. Leaving aside the fact that explicit understanding of individual events is a completely different chapter…
