CD Projekt wants to learn from previous mistakes when developing the new Witcher

It’s no secret that CD Projekt is gradually transferring most of its human resources to the development of the new Witcher after the completion of the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt technical director Colin Walder shared an interesting overview of the work of the studio and the ideas of its leadership in an interview with InvenGlobal magazine. He said that the studio were going through difficult times especially after the release of Cyberpunk 2077which suffered from serious technical problems, especially on the latest generation of consoles, resulting in the game being removed from the PlayStation Store.

According to Walder, during this period it was difficult to maintain high morale within the team, which was necessary due to the necessary renovation work. But the problematic edition of Cyberpunk should also lead to a number of lessons being learned, which the studio will use when developing a new Witcher, codenamed Polaris. For example, it was supposed to change the approach to development for consoles. In the case of The Witcher, individual console ports must undergo rigorous internal testing from the very beginning, following the example of the PC version. According to Walder, it was the neglect of this step that led to the problems of Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles.

The technical director of the studio is also commented on overtime and crunches, which the developers did not avoid when launching Cyberpunk. And along these lines, Walder talks about a specific change in strategy that should prevent similar problems with other approaches. Whether CD Projekt lives up to these words is a question at the moment. The release of the new Witcher is still a long way off. However, it is clear that the company is not taking the situation it faced with Cyberpunk lightly and does not want to repeat it at any cost.
