Mechs on an Expedition – a game from the world of Scythe enters the fray again
Stop fighting for peace. In Expedition, a game from the world of Scythe, you will travel to a remote corner of the Earth. The reason you are going to Siberia is because a meteorite has fallen in this place and you need to get as much as possible from it. So, you take one of the unique mechs and head to a place where things aren’t going too well for humanity. However, there can only be one winner. Others fade into oblivion.
At the very beginning, you receive one of five specially designed robots. For example, the Swamp Terror can move more efficiently than its opponents. Then the Bison can perform more tasks, and the Woodcutter pays less to get rid of cards that represent slowly spreading Fate. Fur isn’t the only thing you can get in Expedition, a game set in the world of Scythe. You will also have access to a hero with an animal companion. Red Olga, for example, has Chang’s tiger cub on hand. Each of the cards has unique abilities and “stats”. The variety of opportunities is definitely a positive factor. In fact, most of the people you know from Iron Harvest are represented here.
Here you need to think about action
At the beginning of each round, you have the opportunity to take an action or rest in Expedition, a game from the world of Scythe. On your board, you can place your token in the “Move”, “Play”, “Collect” positions. You automatically discard your chosen action and then take two uncovered actions without being able to take the same action the next turn, so you kind of have to think ahead. The simplest action is movement, within which you can move one to three cells on the map. If you travel to the discovered locations, everything is fine, but once you arrive at an undiscovered square, you will receive a map token, and you will also have to draw doom tokens so that their total value matches the number below.
Not a fan of movement? No problem, the option to perform the Play action still exists. It works like this: you take a card from your reserve (left side of the board) and place it on the active row (right side of the board). Each card has a basic advantage and a specific effect. Some have an additional benefit or task that you can complete if you are in the appropriate location. When you complete an order (pay for a certain amount of raw materials), you will receive a bonus located under the red arrow. This way you can get resources (strength, intelligence, coins), upgrades or cards. You can complete a limited number of tasks, but their content is interesting. You will search for meteorite fragments, destroy zombies or look for survivors.
Finally, there is the Collection event. This is used to take advantage of where your mech is currently located. This way you can get new workers, exchange cards in the menu laid out between locations, take advantage of the benefits of a neighboring location, or activate the effect of a card lying next to your location. You can also play cards from the reserve, return workers from your active cards to the mech board along with active cards, or receive new cards from the menu or deck.
If you happen to not want to take any of the three steps presented in the next turn after taking your last action, you still have the option of letting your unit rest. By resting you will return all active cards back to your reserve. And that is not all. Once relaxed, you will have the option to do all three of the above in the order of your choice instead of two.
As you may have noticed from the previous paragraphs, maps are very important to the gameplay of Expedition, a game from the world of Scythe. The game has meteorite cards with a clear effect after discovering more items configured in this way, in addition to them there are also item cards, their assortment is incredibly diverse. In it you can find a scythe, a shaky grenade, a spherical grenade and a number of other toys that one way or another determine the appearance of your quest. If you’re planning on using them to fight others, you might be a little disappointed, there’s nothing like it here, but I don’t see that as a problem because the gameplay is really good. The end of the game is always triggered when one of the players places their glory token on the 4th position. The winner is the richest player who successfully collects coins, glory tokens, upgrades, and also fights the omnipresent doom.
Expedition certainly doesn’t put the Scythe series to shame.
Board Game Expedition – Set in the world of Scythe, the game puts you in the hands of one mech and lets you “fight” other players to see who will return rich from an expedition to the uncharted corners of Siberia, and who will fail and fall. into oblivion. You will find a lot of maps, relatively accessible gameplay and working with your giant. The icing on the cake, at least in my opinion, are the figures, which are visually very well done. If you like Scythe and are missing it, be sure to try this piece, it might just satisfy your hunger.
