John Ricciello ends with immediate effect at the head of the Unity company, which develops the engine of the same name. This was first reported by a journalist Jason SchreierAn official press release immediately confirmed the news. Riccitiello will not remain CEO, president of the company or a member and chairman of the board of directors.
“The Board of Directors will begin a comprehensive search process for (…) a permanent CEO,” Unity wrote. Former IBM CEO James M. Whitehurst will serve as interim director. Unity will consult with Ricciello about its next steps to ensure a smooth transition.
“It has been an honor to lead Unity for nearly a decade and serve our employees, customers, developers and partners who have contributed to the company’s growth,” said Riccitiello, who has made a number of controversial moves. For example, last summer Unity bought a company known for developing malware. Ricciello subsequently called some of the developers idiots. Even as a result of the acquisition, Unity had to lay off hundreds of employees.
Most recently, the company announced the introduction of a fee for each installation of a game running on the Unity engine. After widespread criticism, she toned down her plans.
