Pierre-Loup Griffetone of the important developers Steam decktold The Verge that we won’t see a successor to Valve’s handheld for several years. According to him, the improved car will not arrive until the end of 2025, and possibly later.
“It’s important to us that Deck offers developers reliable performance, and the message to customers is clear: every deck can play the same games. So we don’t take changes in productivity levels lightly and only want to do so if there is significant enough growth,” he explains.
“At the same time, we don’t want higher performance to impact energy efficiency and battery life. I don’t expect such a leap to be possible in the next few years, but we continue to closely monitor innovations in architecture and manufacturing processes to see how things go,” he adds.
According to Griffeis, battery life, along with screen quality, is the most important aspect of the Steam Deck that a successor must address. However, the developer’s words do not exclude the possibility that the device could receive similar improvements, such as the Nintendo Switch, without increasing performance.
