The idea of portable computers, or pocket game consoles, is simply brilliant. Having the opportunity to sit on the sofa or bed for three quarters of an hour before going to bed, holding a small device in your hand and play your favorite game without tediously browsing through the system will be appreciated by a considerable number of players. The modern trend was practically revived with the advent of the Nintendo Switch and taken to an even higher level. Steam deck from Valve. Mainly because it gives the same opportunity to fans of more demanding PC games.
The handheld from the creators of the legendary Counter-Strike series and the operator of the most popular PC platform for purchasing video games uses the operating system SteamOS, built on Linux. It differs from Windows, which is used by the competitor ASUS ROG Ally or most Chinese handhelds, for example, in its simplicity – you can enter the game in the blink of an eye after turning it on, and you do not have to deal with unnecessary ballast. In addition, the system is fully adapted to the size and control of the console.
But what’s holding the Steam Deck back a bit right now is the hardware.. Since the laptop came out in 2020 and was created several years before that, it’s clear that it’s based on older technology than its current opponents. The APU that powers the Steam Deck uses the Zen 2 processor architecture, while the graphics core is based on the RDNA architecture. While there are dedicated chips for handheld consoles like AMD’s Ryzen Z1 (Zen 4 + RDNA 3), they’re simply not very competitive.
Despite this, Steam Deck is still popular and attracts new customers all the time, which is mainly due to the aforementioned advantages related to the simplicity of the system. However, some players are not satisfied with the performance of Valve’s current handheld, but they do not want to buy competing models for various reasons, so they are now waiting for the updated version to arrive. It was previously thought that it could be released sometime in 2024, but it turns out thatand waiting is probably pointless. Because Valve is not going to release Steam Deck 2 for at least the next two years.
The information came from the foreign portal The Verge, which was reported by one of the Steam Deck developers, Pierre-Loup Griffet. He claimed that Valve wants to introduce a new generation only when it can provide significant performance gains. While ROG Ally and other consoles are already significantly faster than Steam Deck, Valve doesn’t like that battery life may be at a disadvantage with currently available hardware.
