Company Unitybehind the engine of the same name, is aware of the chaos caused by the announcement of the new pricing policy, but is not going to back down. The developers are talking about an unprecedented scandal and are not going to pay Unity to install games; rather, it will change the engine. Very popular games may disappear from offer for a while.
As of 01/01/2024, new conditions will come into force, according to which developers of games created in Unity will have to pay for the number of installations as soon as they reach the established income and exceed the number of lifetime installations. For the cheaper Unity plan, this will happen after reaching $200,000 per year in revenue and 200,000 lifetime installs, while Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise will charge after reaching $1 million per year and 1 million lifetime installs.
Once developers using the Unity engine exceed the thresholds, they will pay 20 cents for each new first installation in case of a lower level. For higher levels of Unity, it will be from $0.01 to $0.15 for each new first installation. They will have to pay even if the client installs the game on a computer and then, for example, on a Steam Deck, because it is a different device.. It’s even the opposite.
Of course, the developers don’t like this, they talk about betrayal and loss of trust in Unity. Luckily, Unity has since backed down a bit, explaining that only first installs count. According to them, the commission should be extended to 10% of studios, installations as part of charity packages will not be counted, and they will switch from services such as Game Pass to the game distributor. In this case at Microsoft.
You could say that Unity forces small developers to pay more for the higher plan (Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise) and avoid fees. This will ensure long-term revenue for Unity.
But that didn’t change the minds of some teams. Studio Innersloth warned that Among Us will temporarily disable and pause new content until the graphics engine changes.. “However, many developers won’t have the time or resources to do the same,” they warn.
