Throughout September, IGN magazine is publishing exclusive content dedicated to Survival Horror Alan Wake. A few days ago this was an 11-minute preview of new gameplay footage, and now this is the first hands-on preview. Matt Purslow went straight to Remedy’s offices in Finland to try out the game. Specifically, this was the third mission of Saga Anderson, called “Local Girl” (from which the previously mentioned 11-minute gameplay comes), and it lasts approximately an hour.
According to Purslow, the start was quite slow, but there was a strong atmosphere. Saga arrived in Wateree, the neighboring town of Bright Falls, where for some reason everyone knows her, even though she doesn’t remember ever being there. He can talk to different characters and find clues. Part of the Saga is supposed to be mostly a detective story, so even in its “thought space” we will be taking notes on characters and places and connecting clues together. Purslow says the UI and controls in this part are quite confusing and confusing, but Remedy has reportedly taken his feedback to heart and will look to improve it for release.
At the same time, this should be a real Survival Horror, where there are few bullets and only a few fights with enemies, but the opponents are really strong. The location is stated to be open, so we can freely move to places where the main task does not lead us, and there should also be enough indentation, as is customary in the genre. There are also puzzles typical for Survival Horror.
In short, as we already know from the footage and as Purslow himself points out at the end of the preview, the Alan Wake sequel does a lot of things differently than the first. IGN’s editor even calls the game one of the most radically different sequels in gaming history. However, he adds that almost all changes are for the better.
Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 27 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
