Starfield keeps a relatively stable 30 FPS on consoles.

The first reviews of Bethesda’s massive RPG Starfield are here, as well as a video from Digital Foundry. Oliver McKenzie tested the Xbox Series X and S versions to find out the differences in detail, resolution and, of course, the frame rate.

At first glance, the two versions may seem very similar, but according to Oliver, there are a few hidden differences. On the Series S, the game has less render distance, less vegetation, and worse shadows or reflections. In some places, the title looks no worse, but just different.

The biggest difference is of course the resolution. On both consoles, the game uses upscaling using AMD FSR 2 technology to achieve the target resolution. on Series X, from 1440p to 4K, and on Series S, from 900p to 1440p. The upscaling isn’t exactly perfect, FSR 2 can create aliasing or flickering, but the game supposedly looks very good on 4K TVs or monitors.

In terms of performance, we already knew that Starfield was aiming for 30fps on both devices. But the good news is that the frame rate is very stable, without any dips, that is, with the exception of two locations. In particular, this applies to the large cities of New Atlantis and Akila, which are probably too large for the processor in the consoles. In them, you will encounter periodic drops in FPS, from minor to very significant. It may even happen that the game freezes for a second and the frame rate drops to zero. Luckily, this shouldn’t be a common occurrence, and you’ll only run into these issues in these two places specifically.
