Sega brought some interesting games to Gamescom this year, and two of them are from the popular Persona series, which, as one of the few JRPGs, has really made its way in the west and has a huge following in Europe and America. And while players are still waiting for the announcement of the alleged sixth installment, they can look forward to the trio remake coming early next year and another Persona 5 spin-off later this year. It is subtitled Tactica and plays a little differently. than the main series.
Although turn-based combat can be found throughout the series, Tactica gives it a slightly different style, more similar to XCOM. You are on a map with squares, where of course covers, flanks and all the other aspects that you know from similar games come into play. In my opinion, Tactica is by far the closest to Mario + Rabbids, especially the second part, because it also has free movement. As long as you don’t perform any action, you can move freely in the given field, which prevents potential errors in the form of overclicks and the like. Overall, the game feels less challenging and more accessible compared to XCOM, which I think is perfect. If you’re looking for something more challenging, Tactica is probably not for you, it’s more of a leisurely activity.
On the other hand, I’m not saying that the fights can’t be difficult, because in a limited time I managed only two. However, my impressions of the game were very positive. There may not be many options, but the magic of XCOM-style gaming is still here, and in short, it’s a very addictive formula that the classic “one more move” definitely applies to. In addition, the possibility of a kind of super attack is unique here. If you place all three of your characters in a triangle shape with a stunned enemy in the middle, you can unleash a very powerful attack that will deal massive damage to everything inside. I am very interested in this mechanic, and I am sure that there will be many tactics with it.
Speaking of characters, you can of course count on the characters from the original Persona 5 voiced by the same voice actors. If you like the fifth part and the local characters, then you will definitely like the dialogues. Unfortunately, I cannot yet assess how interesting the story will be, how many dialogues there will be, and whether we should expect any gameplay other than combat.
Styling is probably quite controversial, because although the game looks beautiful, the characters have a “chibi” appearance, that is, a small body and a large head. Purely subjectively, I must say that this is definitely not my cup of coffee, on the other hand, I don’t really mind and I think that it can be chewed without problems. I would probably imagine the visual a little differently, but I don’t see a big problem in this.
And finally, I must mention the fantastic soundtrack. After all, Persona has always been great, and Tactica is no exception. After only 15 minutes of playing, you want to immediately go and play all the songs. In short, you again have something to look forward to.
Persona 5 Tactica is a nice mix of XCOM and the popular JRPG series. It’s accessible even to complete newcomers to the genre and is of course very geared towards fans of the original Persona 5 thanks to familiar characters. Personally, I’m really looking forward to the game and I’m curious if I still have such positive impressions even after playing the whole game. It will release on November 17 on PC and all consoles.
