This year, the Armored Core series is celebrating its 26th anniversary. Prior to the announcement of the sixth main installment, subtitled Fires of Rubicon, we wouldn’t blame you if you were never interested in it. While the “souls” of FromSoftware got out of niche segment of the gaming industry into the lucrative mainstream; a frenzied action game with huge mechs in the form of Armored Core from the same developers has not yet been made. But there is nothing to be surprised. At the time when parts of the series were published regularly, these were specific and somewhat inaccessible editions, which, especially in Europe, never gained much circulation. And the most recent part came out ten years ago. At a time when this Japanese studio has already made a name for itself with the first Dark Souls, but not enough to keep everyone looking forward to what they come up with next. Two Game of the Year awards made a difference just a few years ago.. The announcement of Armored Core 6 surprised and enticed everyone – even if they heard about it for the first time – and everyone was curious what exactly masterpiece for us, these developers are forging this time.

I’m not a fortune teller, but I can say one thing for sure. I don’t think FromSoftware is counting on a hat trick. Probably not, because Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon would be a bad game. But because it’s great…only for certain players. And if you find yourself among such a group of people, I hope this review will answer you.

The new Armored Core has a lot to offer. But no matter how you look at it, gameplay is pretty much the only thing you’ll care about in the final. This is an action with large robotic robots. In particular, the so-called “armor cores”. It’s about de facto A third-person shooter in which you will pilot your own multi-ton monster to complete various tasks, shoot enemies or defeat bosses. Conceptually, this is actually a very simple name; perhaps unsurprisingly, at its core, it hasn’t changed much since its birth in 1997.

The principle of the whole game can actually be divided into two large parts. On the one hand, there are the mentioned missions, on the other hand, the garage is no less important.. In it you will spend a surprisingly large part of the game time. You will buy new parts for your mech and build it according to your needs. You can change the head, body, arms, legs, weapons on the left and right arm and left and right shoulder, as well as generators, aiming system, boosters and the so-called core expansion. This is definitely one of the strongest points of the game.

We’re not talking about constantly improving your mech with ever-increasing amounts of health, damage, speed, or generator efficiency. You can try to achieve everything at once, but in vain. A constant balance between speed and endurance or agility and powerful weapons will accompany you from start to finish. And trying to stick to one style of play will also not lead to success. The basic game loop of Armored Core can be described with the timeless meme “Improvise. Adapt. Overcome – that’s what Improvise. Adapt. overcome. You will face new and different challenges in the missions. For example, some missions will require you to quickly explore the wreckage for a few minutes. Using a giant robot with straps and god knows how many missiles is probably not the best choice. On the other hand, if you’re up against a large machine with a shield, a weak but nimble mech with a kinetic weapon probably won’t do much. Constantly changing the mechanism and adapting its capabilities, as well as balancing its strengths and weaknesses for each situation, is not only the key to success, but also what the whole game is based on in the first place.
