There are not many games with a cooperative campaign. Of course, all the more pleased was the information that the long-awaited RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 will have a co-op. Of course, this was not a big surprise, since previous titles from the developers from Larian Studios also had cooperation.
Get a (reliable) escort!
My husband and I played Divinity: Original Sin 2, so we had a pretty clear idea of what to expect. You play the Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign with four characters, this number is fixed. However, any slot can be occupied by both a pre-prepared NPC companion and a real player, so up to four people can play. Campaign is the general form of a guest player that others join, as was the case in Divinity.
This leads to some features that need to be taken into account. Perhaps the most important thing is that the game was preserved only by a visiting player. Therefore, only he may be able to continue the game without you, in which case he will take control of your character.
I highly recommend that you also think carefully about how reliable a guest player is. The campaign in Baldur’s Gate 3 is extremely long, and if he stops enjoying the game in the middle, then you will have a very difficult time dealing with the situation. Of course, difficulties also arise if another player drops out during the game. In short, departures and arrivals cannot be handled as easily and elegantly as in Dungeons & Dragons tabletops.
We play the campaign together, each of us controls his own character and one trained companion.
Tactical lessons
Of course, the big question in the case of multiplayer is the profession. Especially if you are playing with four other players. Building a balanced party is not fun, especially if someone insists that they must play a paladin with an oath of allegiance (which, by the way, is a great choice and a lot of fun in the campaign), and someone is determined to unleash their thief on himself big villain in the whole world.
Playing with two players gives you a lot of opportunities, because in addition to the character you created and the chosen profession, you simply add another one that can complement both your character and the character of a teammate. Another advantage of fewer people is of course shorter waits during turn-based battles. Since it was clear to my husband from the very beginning that he wanted to play a bard, and the character Lae’zel did not catch on with any of us in early access, I chose a 2-meter half-elf warrior who could intercede with a two-handed sword in case the bard had any manipulation or lies will not work. To do this, we took the help of the cleric Shadowheart and Astarion’s crossbow support from the rear.
Charm or intimidate
What makes Baldur’s Gate great is, of course, the number of options. It may happen that I, as a fighter with low intelligence, run into a decisive dialogue, but even with the charisma of an average brick, I can still try to turn the situation into good old-fashioned intimidation. Similarly, ignorance of occult subjects does not matter. As the saying goes, when the only solution you have at hand is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
However, diplomatic negotiations are much better with a bard, and his set of support spells is also quite useful in combat. As a bonus, he can talk to animals or help improve your economic situation by picking the pockets of random passers-by. And of course, this is just one of many, many combinations of characters and professions.
Of course, you have little control over your teammate’s actions, which leads to often unexpected but often comical situations, whether in the context of interacting with NPCs or during fights.
But does it work?
We tried co-op as soon as the developers added it to early access and of course a lot of things didn’t work at first, the game had connection issues, the options for teammates were very limited, and of course there were various bugs in the gameplay that I won’t even name.
But Larian got the most out of early access and in the full game we ran into a couple of games and a couple of minor issues with late game response in the full game for about ten hours of play, but they were definitely not frequent or extremely serious shortcomings.
Baldur’s Gate 3 can only be recommended to everyone. If you’ve played Original Sin 2, you’ll feel right at home here, but if you haven’t, it just works and is a lot of fun.
