A remastered version of the PlayStation 5 has been rumored for some time now, and has been mentioned several times by trusted insider Tom Henderson when talking about a release late next year. And now, a few months after the original report was published, he has published more details in Key To Gaming magazine.

According to him, the PlayStation 5 Pro is indeed, despite many conflicting reports from other insiders, still in development and has a code name. Trinity, which is said to have been established since the beginning of last year. Still in November of this year, the first devkits should go to developersaccording to Henderson, the actual release of the console has yet to be scheduled. November 2024.

And what exactly should the Pro version bring? Henderson mentions two numbers. The first is related to the graphics chip − 30 ZGP (Workgroup Processor) and each WGP contains 2 CUs (Computing Unit). This would mean an increase from 36 CU of the original model to 60 computational units.. Henderson no longer talks about the architecture used, RDNA 3. Leaked HW will of course be suggested. Kepler he thinks it might even be RDNA 3.5 that AMD is actually preparing, in part because RDNA 3 offers very little progress over 2 (used in the PS5). At the same time, Kepler adds that the SoC that is supposed to power the PS5 Pro is codenamed. Viola.

The second number that Henderson talks about is 18,000 MT/s, i.e. Megatransfers per second. This is the effective memory frequency and is often inaccurately reported in MHz. For the PS5 base model, it is 14,000 MT/s, so the new model should provide more throughput through faster speeds.

The processor isn’t mentioned at all in the article, but that might be one of the biggest improvements. Several leaders have previously mentioned moving to the Zen 4 architecture instead of Zen 2, which will result in a significant performance boost. However, we will have to wait until such reports are confirmed.

Henderson still talks about PS5 Pro goals that should come first stable FPS in 4K resolutionbut also like new performance mode for 8K resolution, whatever that means. It is highly likely that this will only be a matter of marketing, because games in 8K are almost unthinkable at the moment and, given the small number of such screens on the market, are relatively useless.

Then the last goal better performance in ray tracing, which could probably be the main attraction for customers. Sony has previously registered a patent for the use of special RT blocks where the calculation will take place, similar to how it happens with its Nvidia or Intel video cards, on the other hand, AMD still uses the classic calculation blocks for RT. However, there is talk that RDNA 4 may already bring special units for RT, so it’s possible that this is something that will arrive early on the PS5 Pro.

The big question mark still hangs over the price, given the relatively ambitious specs, it doesn’t look like it’s a replacement for the base model, but rather Sony is aiming for something higher. Of course, we have to wait and see how much it will be.

Finally, it is worth adding that this year (supposedly in September) a new model with a removable mechanism should enter the market, which should completely replace the existing one. However, the performance should be almost the same.
