See what Portal: Prelude RTX looks like

Last December we saw the release of Portal RTX, a remaster of Valve’s puzzle game Portal, which was originally released in 2007. The improved version, which is available completely free of charge to owners of the base game, brings improved textures and, above all, the implementation of path tracing, i.e. full ray tracing. However, this was not the only Portal that was given such care.

Yesterday, Nvidia unveiled Portal: Prelude RTX, a remaster of the popular mod that serves as a prequel to the first and brought in 19 test rooms. The remaster, created using the RTX Remix platform, again offers the implementation of path tracing or DLSS 3 support, i.e. both upscaling and image generation and Reflex technology that reduces latency. On top of all that, it also supports RTX IO, which we wrote about yesterday. This is the technology behind Microsoft’s DirectStorage. Using GPU decompression results in faster loading, less CPU usage, and smaller game file sizes. To take full advantage of this technology, you will need an SSD, ideally an NVMe.

Path tracing is of course very demanding so the hardware requirements are high, you can see them below. If even turning on DLSS doesn’t help you, you can look into the settings, where you can select one of the path tracing presets, or specifically select parameters that you want to reduce, such as the amount of light reflections.

I personally tested the game on an RTX 4080 when at 1440p with Ultra settings and DLSS Balanced the frame rate was around 70fps. For a similar value in 4K, it was necessary to lower DLSS to Performance and turn on frame generation, so the frame rate did not work as well as the classic 70 due to more latency.

Portal: Prelude RTX is available on Steam for free to all owners of the base game.
