Arion Kurtai made a big splash last year. At the age of 17, as part of a hacker group Slip$ posted over 90 development videos and images in September Grand Theft Auto 6 and blackmailed not only the game company Rockstar Games into releasing the source code, but also Uber, Revolution or Nvidia. He was arrested at the end of September.
Now it turned out that today Eighteen-year-old Kurtai was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial. He will not be tried because of his mental disorder, but the jury will decide whether he committed the acts or not. Kurtai was previously charged with 12 crimes, including fraud and attempted extortion.
His 17-year-old friend, with whom he hacked and blackmailed companies, was charged with two counts of extortion, two counts of fraud and three counts of computer misuse. He is not believed to have been involved in the Rockstar hack. Instead, he and Kurtai were to blackmail Britain’s largest broadband provider BT Group (BT.L) and mobile operator EE from July to November 2021. They had to demand a $4 million ransom, Reuters writes.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named due to his age, even hacked into the London Police cloud storage weeks after police arrested him in connection with the attack on BT.L and EE. Kurtaj later embarked on a solo career in cybercrime. He first hacked Revolut, two days later Uber, and then Rockstar. The prosecutor’s office identified this couple as key players in the Lapsus$ group..
