Whether it’s challenging platforming, frantic racing, or party game minigames, the Crash Bandicoot series has done it for years. And even more recently with the remake of the original trilogy, the amazing fourth installment and the remake of Crash Team Racing. Activision knows very well that this bandicoot entertainment has not yet said its last word and she didn’t destroy the last crate. And we also strongly believe in it. It’s all the more unfortunate that the recently released Crash Team Rumble is so much fun, but with a disappointing roar into the water.
Say goodbye to classic platformer gameplay or kart racing. Crash Team Rumble is only aiming for one thing – team 3d action race in the one who first collects the required number of wampa fruits. Who succeeds depends on the four players on each of the two teams, as well as whether the individual players perform their role sufficiently. Running around the map as a rabid marsupial is not quite the only content of individual, usually three-minute matches, as it might seem at first glance.
As I mentioned earlier, both teams try to collect enough fruit to take it to the team’s bank in a big circle. But whether or not you need to focus on that as a person depends on the character you choose. Like rising hero shooters and, to some extent, Crash Team Racing, Rumble boasts its own roster of playable heroes. And of course, there are also cons. At the same time, everyone has different statistics, abilities, as well as the role to which they are adapted within the team.. At the time of the release of the title and the preparation of the review, there are only eight characters in the game, and each of them has one of three focuses. It could be, as in the case of Crash, Tony and newcomer Catbat, the so-called “scorersSo it’s kind of like a shooter; characters that can collect the most fruits at once, but can’t excel in direct combat. Coco and Neo Cortex, in turn, fall into the category “Boosters“. More like support characters that can take more relics at a time instead of fruits, which I will talk about a little later. Last but not least, and in the case of Dingodile and N. Bria, it can also be about “BlockersBandits, on the other hand, are great at stopping enemy players from advancing.
While depending on the role you should focus more on what the character specializes in, you can do whatever you want with them. In the finale, the difference is really only in whether you store more fruits, relics, or last a little longer in direct combat. Thus, the biggest differences lie in the characters themselves. even in the same role. Each hero or villain is played in a completely different way and has completely different abilities, which you will also recognize very well from the main parts of the series. Crash is probably the easiest and has no shortage of classic twists, slides or splashes. On the other hand, Neo Cortex has his own firearms, he can drop a piano from the sky, and when hit, which is not the easiest thing, he can also turn a foreign player into a chicken for a moment, for example. Dingodile, as probably the strongest hero, can wag his tail and suck fruits from other players with his vacuum cleaner. So some of them are more mobile – for example, Tavna has a grappling hook – others hit harder or can handle more hits from a distance. Personally, I appreciate that it’s not just about famous skins, but really interesting choices that affect how you play. As well as a special skill that you can choose regardless of the character and which you recharge in the first place by playing correctly for your role. In the selection you will find such unique products as healing refrigerator or garbage rainbut it is definitely not recommended to look at these things through your fingers, because they can change the course of the match radically.
Which slowly brings me to the cards. At the moment there are nine of them in the game, and after just a few hours I came to the conclusion that there are catastrophically few of them. As you can probably imagine, in the context of the aforementioned eight players and the fact that matches last around three minutes, the maps are extremely small. Which in itself is not a problem, on the contrary, it creates beautiful chaos and you can’t just run away anywhere. However, very quickly things get out of place and there comes a point where you tell yourself that from the very beginning there should have been even three times as many cards. Maybe something will help variety of elements; whether it’s a change in time of day or even weather, different buffs, different deployment of command banks or something like that. Unfortunately the cards are fixed and while they are good and I don’t really have major reservations in terms of their design and from a practical point of view, this is one of the main factors that just lead to the opinion that they are not. a lot of content.
But to be honest, the cards themselves definitely have a fair amount of going on and are quite different from each other. This is mainly due to the fact that each card has its own unique bonuses. And now we come to the relics mentioned earlier. In addition to fruits, you can also collect them around the map and then use them to unlock one of the available buffs for your team for a while.. For example, on the Tiki Towers map, for just two relics, you can unlock a catapult, or to be more precise: a bandicootapult that launches you to the top of the central tower. To get more relics, you can unlock bombardment, and if you spend enough time with relics, you can even pile up in front of the enemy team for the ultimate boost in the form of the Uka Uka mask, which sends a meteor storm across the map. But, as mentioned, each card has something different. The Thar Valley, with a lava river in the middle, offers an Aku-Aku mask or a scattering of damaging fungi. In the greenery of the Gardens of Serenity, you can grow a wampa-infused bonsai or put on an attacking Akano mask. The Factory Rusted Refinery change includes the ability to unleash a sandstorm on the map, place burners on the team bank, or add an explosive jump effect that enemies will hate.
I personally appreciate this variability, and each card, like the characters, acts not just as a glorified reskin, but as its own and very memorable thing.. I even like that they are different enough not to stick to the same design methods. The City Scrape of the city is relatively large and fairly vertical, with plenty of options for walking around. As an option, where to send the enemy to the eternal hunting grounds. On the other hand, the pleasant beach at Just Beachy is quite small, quite flat and therefore also safe.
The last element that is contained in the cards and interferes with the gameplay is gems. Platforms, usually in a series of three or four, that you have to jump on to color them in your team’s color. Once you tag the whole streak and hold onto it for a while for your team, you’ll get an extra boost to win the wump when you bank them. This is perhaps the main thing that will determine whether your team wins or loses.. That is, unless the members of your or the enemy team are complete udders, which unfortunately happens quite often in my experience.
After all, Crash Team Rumble actually does pretty good things with their characters, maps, and a really good game loop. At the moment, I see the problem primarily in the lack of solid content, which at the same time leads to the rapid emergence of a stereotype, or at least exaggeration. In short, this is the disease of live service games; as well as the presence of a battle pass, with which you can unlock new skins, hats, backpacks, emotes for your characters, or for your profile, such as background or music that plays at the end of matches when you are the best of all players. I don’t see microtransactions as aggressive here. The battle pass and its contents aren’t even offensive, but I wonder if Activision could have done better in the ending for the game’s longevity. if it was a free game. I already played Crash Team Rumble on release day and had the opportunity to run into some minor but still existing issues with finding all the players to populate the lobby.
So the question is, can we already plan the date of the funeral or the seasons, updates and new content will come with such frequency that in a few months Crash Team Rumble will swing somewhere. Personally, I would appreciate it if over time the game started to try something different. Team racing seems pretty fun and balanced at first, but I have to say that I’m missing something in terms of another Crash Bash. On the other hand, this name seems a bit stuck on one note. with a fairly rapid onset of the stereotype, which is just not very good.

So there is not much to praise, but nothing much to complain about either. Everything is controlled simply and excellently, the graphics are in a nice sharp and animated style, as in recent years, and the music… The music is actually most of the best tracks from the other parts, so while not new, it’s great.. Optimizing, with the exception of one ailment, is also not a problem. And what is this disease? This is going to sound like a really bad joke, but the game crashes a lot. It just falls. When loading, during the game, in the menu; whenever and wherever she randomly wants. But the developers hope to fix this ailment soon.
In the end, Toys for Bob’s Crash Team Rumble is an enjoyable and fairly simple team game that, unfortunately, lasts a few evenings at most in its current form. Perhaps younger players will enjoy it the most, mainly due to the very low skill ceiling.. In other words, you can’t improve your gameplay much because the depth of individual mechanics isn’t very deep. But if new maps, new characters, and ideally new modes come along fast enough, it could end up being a really good respite from hard days where you just want to literally sit down for a few minutes and relax a bit, like playing as N You turn Brio into a big mutant who swings his fists and beats up several people. But if you don’t want to, or updates don’t come quickly, I’m very worried about the future of this project.
Verdict
Crash Team Rumble is an interesting competitive team game about collecting “apples” and defeating the other team. A solid base that sadly lacks sauce. Unfortunately, the small number of maps, characters, and a single mode – despite their uniqueness and differences from each other – do not compensate for the fact that this game fails due to the lack of depth and content.
