As a fan of horror games, I hate supposedly scary games that are all about sneaking around enemies. I used to be of the opinion that no matter how terrible a monster you make, sooner or later the players will simply get tired of the constant game of cat and mouse. Today I know that it shouldn’t be like this. Fourth part the legendary Amnesia series, which returns to the old well-planted roots of the first part to let a young but proper tree grow out of them, convinced me of the opposite. Maybe in this match they cheated a little maybe the monster from the military bunker itself is not so alive, but thanks to the thousands of details and the attention of the developers, it’s impossible to evaluate the monster just like that. And that’s probably what it is reason for success.
SUCH A DIFFERENT ESCAPE
Amnesia: Bunker action horror survival gamein which you take on the role of the French soldier Henri. You wake up in a corner of a bunker, the only entrance to which is blocked by your superiors. Why? You don’t know it because, as it happens, you have amnesia However, I can tell you that it is because of the bloody monster that hides in the walls of the bunker. Your officers have escaped, but you do not want to be their scapegoat, so do not wait for death, but try to find a way out.
When they say Amnesia: The Bunker is going back to the series’ roots, they mean wait. good portion of survival mechanicsand history is such an easy dessert. Unlike Rebirth, which was often just a walking simulator and revolved around history, The Bunker feels like a game in the truest sense of the word. Clearly you can find some videos herebut they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. You uncover the rest of the story by finding letters and diaries. In other words, you will gradually learn how the situation in which you find yourself has developed, but you will not get anything else. The developers really focused only on the gameplay and the intimidating atmosphere, which can turn someone off, but personally I saw this as a big plus. Although I like Rebirth and its emphasis on history. she received the sacraments.
NO ONE WILL LEAD YOU BY THE HAND IN WAR
In order to get out of the damned bunker, you have to find dynamite somewhere in its bowels and knock out the already knocked out entrance. Although this only one way out, there are countless ways to get to it. Any obstacle that comes in your way several different solutions while the game does not try to lead you by the hand and tell you how and what to do. He gives hints through found notes and photos, but does not say anything directly, which, in my opinion, is a very good approach. Ultimately, you will learn that, for example, by combining various items found, you can create healing bandages, Molotov cocktails for protection, or a torch that repels rats. I confess, although at the beginning of the game I read several posts about the importance of incinerating corpses, it’s just I didn’t realize that this is what I could do, and that in this way I will get rid of the rats once and for all. It wasn’t until I accidentally hit a dead body with a Molotov cocktail that a light bulb lit up over my head, and I wondered how many other hidden mechanics actually exist and how much work and materials I could save by discovering them.
So one could almost say that Amnesia: The Bunker this is a logical way out. How long it takes you to escape varies from one game to another. Most item locations and locker codes are randomly generated, so you can get lucky and have everything you need right at your fingertips. So you’ll see through the headline within three hours. However, it may also happen that you have to carefully explore every corner and you finally see the outside world (like me) until about six hours later. Simply put, if the game doesn’t interest you, you can just go through the main quests and almost speedrun the title. However, if you’re wondering what you can and can’t do in The Bunker, then this is not a quick fix.
LIGHT WITHOUT LIMITS… ALMOST WITHOUT LIMITS
The basis of Amnesia has always been light and its absence. The bunker is the same, although in vain you will look for tinderboxes here. Instead of a flashlight, it is available to you dynamo flashlight, which does not need oil, but makes a lot of noise when charging. Any noise will draw the attention of the monster, so you will have to constantly think about what you really want to see. Of course, there is a second light source in the game. rescue generator, which causes electricity to flow throughout the bunker. On the one hand, this means that if you have enough fuel, you can not worry about the abundance of dark alleys and even not so many monster attacks. On the other hand, if you do not have fuel, you will have to explore the corridors in complete darkness, some parts of the map will be closed and the monster is much more aggressive.
Speaking of the monster, it’s great to see that we finally have a horror movie where we can defend ourselves with more than just firearms without being distracted by the creepy atmosphere. He deserves credit for this. absolutely perfect sound designin which they play surrounding sounds. The crackling of wood, the stomping of the beast, and the occasional bombs falling to the ground above the bunker all completely mislead you into believing you are in control. What’s more, The Bunker proves that the constant cat-and-mouse game can indeed be exciting all the time. The magic of this success lies in the existence only one save point. On normal difficulty, there is only one lantern in the entire bunker where you can save your progress, so any expedition to the far corners of the concrete is exactly that. I won’t lie, the monster in the walls is not so scary that I was afraid of him all the time while playing. But my respect for him the longer I played, the more it grew. Especially towards the end of the game, when my quests got longer, I felt a pleasant stress, because I just didn’t want to lose all my progress. Sneaking down the corridors, hoping I’m calm enough to go back and collect everything I’ve collected, only to hear heavy footsteps in the ceiling directly above me and see dust puffs in a hole in the wall ahead of me… it wasn’t just fear, it was a pleasant disappointment. An obstacle that I had to strategically avoid, otherwise I would be in the teeth of the beast and lose everything.
“FROM TWO METERS GOOD”.
However, you don’t have to worry about The Bunker being bug-free. All my praise, and mostly the game itself, is drowned out by one single point, namely, that old engine. A person who is not demanding on game graphics may not find anything wrong, but observant players will freeze how old The Bunker looks at first sight. Especially the models of other soldiers, despite the stylization, indicate that the engine on which Amnesia 1 was running is no longer at its best. As they said: “It’s good from two meters” but once you look at some of the textures up close, it won’t please your eye.
However, this is nothing compared to loading screen issues. In 2023, it seems completely insane to build an ace-shaped corridor in an underground labyrinth in which you image freezes for 3 secondsbefore the next part of the map can be loaded. I’m not even talking about your character jumping weird. At the same time, the overall map of the bunker is not so incredibly large that these loading jams can somehow be justified.
So how to sum it all up? Amnesia: The Bunker pleasantly surprised me by turning the usual and annoying cat-and-mouse game into a strategic and constantly slightly unnerving game. The horror will not stay with you until the end of the game, but the monster in the walls, at least for me it never botheredand this is something I really didn’t expect. If only Frictional Games would finally change the engine and technically improve this game, it would be a blast. That’s how we “just” have to put up with a super horror movie that, despite its flaws, we definitely recommend.
Verdict
Amnesia: The Bunker has done the impossible, turning an annoying game of cat and mouse into a strategic battle for survival that will keep you suspenseful throughout the game. Freedom in solving problems and a pleasant light story only drags away the outdated appearance and problematic loading.
