Zombicide is a strong brand with a number of alternative releases. For players who are uncomfortable watching the fate of ordinary people, warriors fighting for their lives in the Middle Ages, or cowboys, the creators of this series now have Marvel Zombies: Superheroes Resistance. The idea of heroism in this work goes to a whole new level, and in the following paragraphs we will consider not only its main characters, but also the monsters that you will have to face.

  • Number of players: 14
  • Game time: 45 – 60 min.
  • Price: 1269 CZK (Thlam Games)

Heroes go on the offensive in Marvel Zombies: Superheroes Revolt

Ordinary heroes of ordinary lives have been replaced by a group of superheroes from the Marvel Universe in Marvel Zombies: Superheroes Revolt. Yes, you can play as Spiderman, Hulk, Black Panther or Wasp. Each of the characters enters the battle to save humanity, having a certain set of abilities. For example, such a Hulk is an irresistible force in a fight with ordinary zombies, because they are unable to harm him. Black Panther, on the other hand, can lower the resistance of his opponents. All in all, the treatment of individual characters is an interesting factor that is certainly of great importance for this work.

In the players stage, you can expect a fairly traditional formation. During your turn, you can focus on moving around the map, the difficulty of which is determined by the number of zombies. When there are no enemies around you, you only spend points to move around. But once it comes to dodging the undead, you need to use extra action points for each restless undead to advance to the next square. In addition to running around the map, you can use action points to open regular doors. But once you want to break the door with a specific dye, you will need to have the target of the same color already reached. Not that the opening itself is anything pleasant, because there is often a lot waiting behind the back door. There is also a “search” here.

Mere mortals in this series usually get weapons or some kind of equipment that they can use during their quests. Here the characters get superhero abilities. In total, each of the heroes can carry two pieces that can strengthen them in a certain way. However, you need to work with the fact that these are only one-time cards, so after the game they need to be discarded, which is a bit disappointing, because I could imagine that, for example, my character would have a Quick ability forever. However, it’s quite possible that this will tip the balance a bit, so it’s actually understandable why special skills can’t be kept. Also, as mentioned, you can only have two superhero cards in your hand. Once you get another one, you must choose which one will advance from the round.

And then, of course, there is also the attack. What kind of Zombicide game would it be if Marvel Zombies: Superhero Revolt didn’t have the ability to really tax enemies. The success of the attack is, of course, determined by the dice values associated with the possible use of special abilities. But as soon as the enemy is destroyed, the heroes receive points that you use to unlock new abilities. Compared to other representatives of a well-known brand, this thing does not work with more complex development. Once you’re done with your characters, it’s zombie time. The ones already here will move first, and then you’ll spawn a new party to fight. Its volume is determined by how far away your heroes are. The further their evolution, the tougher the undead monsters.

In Marvel Zombies: Superheroes Revolt, superzombies also appear on the scene.

While most other Zombicide games feature zombies as plastic models, here you have cardboard figures instead of undead that you can color in. There is, of course, the base version of slow moving walkers, fast moving female runners, as well as zombie fighters whose bodies can take more damage than normal undead. Instead of the fearsome zombie monsters known from other variants of this game, in Marvel Zombies: Superheroes Resistance you will find infected superheroes. So, more precisely, a quartet of iconic characters. The uninfected will have to face Captain America, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch or Iron Man.

Individual characters differ from each other not only in visual design, but primarily in what special abilities they have. Yes, since they are superheroes, each of them has a superpower that they are not afraid to use against your heroes. For example, when the Scarlet Witch appears on the battlefield, all heroes have to roll again after their roll, which is not very pleasant after a successful roll. Doctor Strange, in turn, is able to switch to one of his opponents, which is why you can never be completely sure that you are all right.

In addition to undead and sick superheroes, Marvel Zombies: Superheroes Fightback also features Helper in Danger cards! As soon as you get such a piece in your hands, you place a helper on the map and begin to slowly move all the undead towards him. When this character succumbs to the undead, you lose the hero card, as well as the super energy needed to perform special attacks. However, if you manage to save the assistant, you will take him with you and thus strengthen your hero. If you assign Wong to yourself, for example, after a melee attack with super energy, you can re-roll all bad luck dice, which sometimes pays off. Every helper has something, so you need to find the one who will help you the most.

Marvel Zombies: The Resistance of Superheroes may surprise Zombicide fans

The Marvel theme is very well explored in Marvel Zombies: Superhero Standoff. The characters are originally designed and reflect the characteristics they have in the series. They cut through zombies with might and eventually, with a little cooperation, they manage to knock even the superheroes off their feet. In addition, the scripts themselves can apply with their proposal. While the core idea is very similar to what most Zombicide fans are already familiar with, Marvel Zombies: Superheroes Revolt offers some interesting innovations that are definitely worth checking out.

Actually, I’m not afraid to say that the game can really impress with its new products. Another factor it can draw to is the price. This is lower than most representatives of the brand, which is mainly due to the fact that instead of a bunch of models, there are only cardboard figures, next to which plastic superheroes appear, but the owners of normal sets can easily cope with this. If you like the Marvel theme or are just looking for a cheaper way to get into zombie hunting, I’m probably not afraid to give this board game a try.
