The fourth part of the fantasy action game Diablo went on sale. Games that didn’t take a lot of trying have become ingrained in the hearts of gamers, so each new addition has been eagerly awaited (and, unfortunately, for a long time). Furious action, massive monsters, amazing weapons, magical attacks and, above all, gigantic pace, great graphics, monumental battles and ever larger and more elaborate worlds. After all, Blizzard is behind the game, and they really believe in creating game universes – just look at World of Warcraft.
“You can really feel the games” says Petr Litosh, director of CREW Publishing, “that the creators have a clear vision, that they know the world in which the story takes place, they know its laws, and they know each of the many monsters not only by name, but also by nickname. There’s a lot going on, and not everything can fit into a game without breaking the pace of the story. So it was time, figuratively speaking, to spread their wings. Take the story to other media as well. And this year, not only another game appeared, but also a comic from this world.
The action of the comic published in our country at the same time as the world release (which is becoming more common in CREW Publishing), takes place some time before the events of the game. The original graphic novel from the world of Diablo follows the rise of Bul-Kathos, the forefather of the barbarians, and his age-old mission to protect Mount Arreat from a terrifying evil. Long before Bul-Kathos became famous as the father of the barbarians, he had only two offspring: the twins Naara and Hiram. The Naara followed in her father’s footsteps and became a great warrior, but Hiram never got used to the ways of his tribe. After years of aimless wandering, Hiram returns to his family, having discovered a new path and a new power that he wants to gain with the help of his father. A dangerous force because behind it is one of the most dangerous beings in the entire series, the demon queen Lilith.
Comic book icon John Arcudi is behind the comic. Yes, the man who brought The Mask to the comics (and the movie) and also worked on stories from the Hellboy universe in the Ú series. John Arcudi’s PVO has a sense of humor and horror, which is much more appropriate here. Thanks to Arcudi’s talent, the comic is not just another classic fantasy story, but in a small space it plays out the tragedy of a father who has to make difficult decisions.
And it’s all brought to perfection with a dynamic, action-oriented and precise pattern. Brazilian comedian Geraldo Borges is famous here. His book The Final Detective: Redemption was recently published, and he also dived into the Avengers: The Honshu Era comic. Abroad, he has worked on, for example, Catwoman, Superman, Batman and other iconic characters. Diablo is his first purely fantasy game, but the pictures show that he really liked it.
