The last full-length sequel to Prince of Persia was released in 2010, along with a film adaptation. Since then, fans have waited in vain for the revival of this hero. After problems with the development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake and its postponement indefinitely at this year’s Summer Game Fest, good news came. Ubisoft introduced Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. The initial reaction was rather mixed, mainly due to the appearance of the Prince himself.

As is often the case when a major brand announces its return, it also brings some gameplay changes with it. Although the game returns to its 2D roots, it differs from its big brother in many ways. Among other things, the new Prince of Persia was inspired by Metroidvania. For casual players it’s a bit more difficult, with complex maps and lots of hidden places, so it can happen to many people that they often get lost in these games and that can discourage them from continuing to play.

However, the developers from Ubisoft came up with an interesting idea. The photo mode in games has recently become a very popular tool. The studio in Montpellier, France decided to improve it, adapt it to the needs of their game, and offer laptop style to players. They called it the Wanderer’s Eye.

“This style of play (metroidvania) depends on the art of taking notes in your head. Remembering and imagining things like blocked passages or situations that require tools or abilities that you don’t currently have.” – began to explain the lead designer Remy Boutin in an interview with British Eurogamer.

“We know this can turn some players off, which is why the Eye of the Wanderer feature allows them to take a photo and pin it to the map as a visual reminder.”

According to the creators, this option should include accessibility, so that as many players as possible can enjoy the game. The main thing for them is free exploration, where they don’t want to upset the players. They focused on this from the very beginning of development.

The developers have prepared more additional controlled mode, which will make it easier for you to pass in different ways. For example, icons will alert you to blocked and free paths. There’s also text highlighting, a practice area without consequences, tutorials, and the ability to pin important controls to the screen.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will release on January 18, 2024 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Amazon Luna.
