From the very beginning, you will think that Planet of Lana is a classic jumping game that offers nothing but jumping. How glad you are to be wrong. This side-scrolling indie platformer with puzzles will captivate you so much that you will really feel its story emotionally. The transition between regular gameplay and cutscenes is so intense that I would compare it to watching a movie. And the developers did such a good job with the camera that they managed to emphasize the emotions that I experienced in this scene. I didn’t have to do anything in the game at all, just hold the right arrow and enjoy the moment that the game offered. But is it cinematic enough to make Planet of Lana a near-perfect game? It would be mean to start the review with a rhetorical question, so I will say right away that it is so. But you ask why? Damn, I’m doing it again!
ROBOT FALLS WHAT I WANT
The story of the game takes place on the planet Novo, where we follow the main character Lana. An orphan kept in company with her beloved sister, Elo.. Although the girls have lost their parents, they both live a peaceful life in the village with other people and enjoy life.
However, this idyll does not last forever and the entire village is attacked and kidnapped by dangerous robots. The only one who escapes is Lana, who refuses to accept her sister’s kidnapping and embarks on a long and painful journey to save her. At this, she also manages to save a special cat she names Mui and they become life partners in this crazy mission.
But don’t expect a serious conversation. Although there are dialogues in the game, you cannot understand their fictional language. But you really shouldn’t. In each specific situation, you can guess the meaning of the conversations and what they really are.
Further control of the game is quite simple. Constantly says what to press. Your character can’t do much on their own, other than climbing a rope, pulling objects, or influencing robots with a found panel. Jumping reminds me a lot of Prince of Persia (Gel would love that!) or Abe’s Odyssey. So simple a simple movement system where you know exactly where you can jump and where you can’t. If only running wasn’t so slow. I often wanted to press the key as hard as I could to make Lana run a little faster… as if the force of the keystroke had something to do with it. It’s also sometimes a little annoying to try to avoid the robot and have to jump, turn, position the character, jump again and run… quite a few times I’ve managed to do this by a hair’s breadth, and some of these animations take an unnecessarily long time. time.
I WILL NOT LEAVE WITHOUT A CAT
But I have never been alone in my travels! My little cat companion Mui helped me overcome many obstacles and solved puzzles. Artificial intelligence, I must say, perfectly and absolutely accurately works with this cat. Mui will sit still, move a lever, or run towards you with a command. You just need to figure out when, what and how to use at any given moment. During the game, you will have to think about how to dodge the robots, how to activate the right mechanism, when to hide, and when, on the contrary, to run with bated breath. The main objective on most screens is simple, you just need to survive with Lana and Mui and move on.
The game has a very well drawn moment of danger, and you can easily recognize when you are in a hole, and when a car is chasing you. At the same time, the robots themselves have their own behavior, so you will know when to stay still or move forward while remaining hidden. The puzzles themselves aren’t difficult at all, so you don’t have to worry about being stuck on one of them for too long. The only pity is that he still no longer suffers from cerebral convolutions. This does not bother the environment, which changes more often, and I had the feeling that it was precisely calculated, until, for example, too long darkness or the usual jungle began to annoy me. Especially in this regard, I have to praise a very sophisticated camera. Although the game looks like a classic 2D platformer in every screenshot, the environment is actually 3D and the game reveals it at just the right moment. As soon as you start the racing-like arcade, the robots will follow you through the space and you will feel the real depth of the individual environments.
In fact, Planet of Lana is not just a trip around the world. It comes with cute cut scenes. The combination of parallax and detailed camera work perfectly highlights the game’s strong points. It was really nice to look at you. Often, looking at beautiful landscapes or places, I had the feeling that I was part of the action and I was able to experience the moment with Lana and Mui.
The game also has a great musical side, the soundtrack of which will play in your head even after you finish the game. Especially a melody designed to reprogram robots just has its own charm. I was also surprised by the technical side of the game, which was more than on top. I managed to fall through the branch only once and kill myself another time, but even then I didn’t encounter any technical glitches and the game ran perfectly smoothly and without any problems. After all, this game is a great relaxing game for a relaxing evening with a glass of wine in hand. Of course, even non-alcoholic. It took me about 5 hours to complete it, and I really hope that in time we will see the second part, because I will remember this experience for a hell of a long time.
