Less than two weeks ago we had the Starfield Direct event and with it an extremely extensive and detailed presentation of the upcoming space RPG. Starfield from the creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4 from Bethesda Game Studios. In the entire approximately 45-minute download of the news, there was not a single mention of historically, perhaps the most important part of the games from Bethesda Game Studios – generous support for modding. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about Starfield’s creators suddenly turning their backs on modders.. Against.

Creative director Todd Howard in Kinda Funny Xcast, he talked not only about life on planets, lack of fishing or 30fps on Xbox, but also about mods. According to Howard, Starfield will be something of a paradise for modders.assuring us that mod support is part of the DNA of the development studio itselfwho has been getting along with custom mod makers for over 20 years.
Todd Howard is definitely not wrong about this. Already a cult RPG The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Since 2002, thanks to the openness of the game engine and the easy availability of tools for modders, a wave of modding has begun, thanks to which new mods for Morrowind are being created today. And from what titles subsequently won The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas (responsible for the latter studio Obsidian Entertainment), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition.
After the release of the last two mentioned games modding support is no longer a PC perk. They gave us a system where you can download a large number of mods created in the Creation Kit tool on PC, as well as on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 console. And it’s just through the main menu, even by deactivating achievements/trophies.
Howard unfortunately, he didn’t say if we’ll be able to enjoy many of the Starfield mods again on Xbox Series X|S as well.. Similarly, we don’t know when official modding tools specifically for the upcoming space RPG and the current version of the decade-old engine, simply called Creation 2, will be released. But he did indicate that this time the developers are not going to be content with simple modding support.
“It is important for us not only to enable modding, but also to participate in it”, Todd Howard said. It is said that Bethesda Game Studios wants to make their job as easy as possible for modders and give them a chance to make modding not only a hobby, but also the start of a career as a game developer. Unfortunately, he also did not develop this interesting idea.
But it seems that the creators are planning something like the Creation Club, a system for Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4 through which Bethesda sells special premium add-ons and accessories created not only by Bethesda Game Studios employees, but also by external developers and experienced modders. Unlike traditional mods, which are still available for free and distributed freely through the Nexus Mods website and other sources, Creation Club includes official publisher support, which means localization into multiple languages, internal testing. or retaining the ability to earn trophies or achievements.
Of course, this includes numerous complaints and ridicule from many players who, at the sight of any concept “paid mods” sees red though Creation Club doesn’t mean charging for any mods that already exist, but rather about smaller DLCs., under which different authors subscribe, who can thus earn some extra money. And it seems that Starfield can offer something similar, although this time the creators clearly have big ambitions.
In every case it is clear that the tradition of game modding from Bethesda Game Studios is preserved. That’s right, that’s how it should be. And now we can only imagine what modders will do with Starfield. In the Indiana edition, for example, there was already a hint that the planet, on the surface of which we can find all of Skyrim, certainly will not be long in coming. Thanks to modding support, the implementation of any fan of the Czech Republic should not be a problem either.. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’ll turn on a modified Morrowind to travel to Mecca in Balmora.
Starfield coming out 06/09/2023 on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. The base game will also be part of Game Pass for consoles and PC.
