Valve has improved and enriched the desktop version of Steam. The news for the largest computing platform in the world has been in beta testing since April this year and, among other things, unifies the interface for desktop computers, mobile devices and Steam Deck.
“The biggest changes in this update are, ironically, subtle at first glance and mostly related to how we share code between the desktop client, Big Picture mode and Steam Deck. However, these are not only changes that make our work easier, but also changes that allow us to quickly implement and modify new features – for example, thanks to them we were able to release a number of new products (for example, notes, see below) simultaneously for the Steam client and the Steam Deck, “ says Valve.
On the other hand, what you won’t miss is visual and functionality of the client. Updated dialog boxes, menus, letters and colors, as well as the top and bottom panels, the settings window or the image manager.
Notifications in the Steam app after an update more informative and the infamous green button (now a bell) only lights up when something new is actually waiting for you. The enum is then reserved for new alerts, but the “Show All” button will take you to the history page. By the way, special settings have also been added to notifications that you can use to determine what notifications you want to see (and where you want to see them).
The most fundamental change of this update is probably Steam overlay complete overhaul, which is available in-game after pressing Shift+Tab. Designers have developed a new user interface, as well as added new features and advanced customization options. At the heart of the changes here is a new panel that offers access to everything you might need in the game – a list of friends and conversations, achievement progress, instructions, discussions, a web browser … By default, some of the most commonly used windows are selected, but each can choose his overlay and customize as needed, and these settings are saved for each game separately.
The feature is definitely an interesting novelty. A comment. This allows you to add your own text notes (including advanced formatting and image embedding) to individual games and can even be used offline. Once you’re connected to the internet, your notes will be synced and you’ll be able to access them across all devices (including your Steam deck) where you’re logged into your Steam account. At the same time, notes can be used both in the overlay and directly in the client on the game details page.
Another useful thing according to Valve is the option pin overlay windows, so they remain visible in the game even after the game is closed. The transparency of these windows is adjustable, only the content is visible from the windows (there are no titles or other interface elements on the way). Ideal when you need to follow detailed instructions in the game… or you want to watch a movie while playing (yes, there are those too).
“Last but not least, we’ve added a Game Overview window to the overlay that summarizes everything that’s happened with a given game since you last played it. For example, you will learn about your “split” achievements, about friends playing the same game, about the latest updates, or about the best guides. What’s more, you’ll find the new server browser, achievements window, and image manager in the overlay as well as on the regular desktop. In addition, we have something for gamers who are obsessed with controllers: an updated configurator, familiar from Steam Deck, is available in the overlay when a controller is connected, and virtual menus can now be used outside of Big Picture mode. supplied by Valve.
