At the same time, on the day of release, some were able to play Quark as part of the Game Access conference in Brno, which was just taking place. We took both opportunities to try this game (respectively, the first episode) and share our feelings and ideas with you.

Kvark is a retro shooter set in an alternative version of the post-Soviet Czech Republic in the eighties. Many would simply call this game “boomer shooter”, that is, a typically feverish first-person shooter full of headless, slaughtering a bunch of enemies a la Doom, Quake or Duke Nukem 3D. However, Quark pleasantly draws inspiration from more immersive era first-person shooter that started out as a cult Half life in 1998. So it’s still a “good old” soulless shooter with enemy raids, but with just the right amount of mysteries and a slower pace. Quark works weird Unreal Engine 5 and despite the fact that one might think that this is a bit overkill for such a retro shooter, the system requirements completely calm.

The first episode of Quark offers quite enough weapons repertoire. In addition to a wrench, a pistol, an AK-47, or two types of shotguns, there is also an amazing choice in the form of the M1 Garand sniper rifle. But I lacked at least one explosive guard in a large stream of enemies, but this will definitely be fixed in the next episodes. In addition, the levels are quite generous and well-scattered. explosive barrels, so there were plenty of fireworks with pieces of enemies. As for the enemies, so far we’ve encountered crazy workers in radioactive suits, whether with an electric baton or a gun, rats that sucked out radioactivity, or maybe defensive flying drones with a machine gun. Then they mix quite interestingly with each other and sometimes become busy. But we’re a little afraid and we hope that more dynamic enemies will appear in the next episodes. Most fights start with finding a group of enemies around the corner and sending them at the player. Then everyone but the drones slowly walk towards you in a straight line. Those with guns often can’t even shoot because they can’t see right through their club-wielding colleagues. And if, God forbid, you stand on the table, then they will simply look at you stupidly.

Game content seems balanced and enemies cutting out missions and slower sections with puzzles and story text flow seamlessly. Quark is also full of cover around every corner, and whenever I had the typical urge to peek around a corner, I was quite surprised to find something waiting for me. Scattered throughout the levels are ammo, lives, armor, and if you’re lucky, experience points to upgrade your character. Yes, you heard right! Quark also has its own skill tree! For example, you can improve your maximum health or increase your hits with a wrench.

We were also pleased with the number of free interactions that exist simply because they can. Radios, smoking butts, showers, or perhaps functional drink machines that even restore life. And there are plenty of such idiots in Quark! And the final “toy” and pleasant inspiration from Half-Life (but Metro 2033 had a similar section) was a whole subsection on rails with its own car. In general, the first Quark series she was very pleased and we finished it in about four hours. The only weak point is the aforementioned lack of enemy variability. Considering how saturated the small arms market has become in recent times, Quark is good. dose of freshness. If this episode is just an example of what lies ahead, we have something to look forward to.

Quark is available on Steam for €15.79 and the developers claim that the next episode will be 12 months. The game should also come out later. Game console, Xbox And Nintendo Switch. And yes, that too Czech subtitles!
