Games get bigger, more complex, more detailed, more complex… Players demand quality, which of course affects how long a game is in development. In accordance with Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty but the industry and fans are not yet fully aware that all this is delaying development.
In an interview with Axios, Booty explained that it used to be possible to make a big-budget game in three to four years. But now four, five or six years have passed. Longer development means demands for higher technical quality, better 4K graphics and other modern titles.

Of course, small games and projects from independent teams can be developed faster and released, for example, in a year. It all depends on the size and complexity of the game you want to make. This is probably why Microsoft allowed its studios to create not only big AAA games (Starfield, Forza Motorsport, Avowed or Fable), but also smaller ones like Hi-Fi Rush.
Booty’s words can be seen as an explanation for why Microsoft has been unable to make quality games for so long. Luckily, these issues seem to be slowly fading away, and the tech giant is moving towards releasing four of its games a year. This year it’s Minecraft Legends, Redfall, Starfield and Forza Motorsport. He’s got Senua’s Saga next year: Hellblade 2, Avowed, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and possibly Southern adventure game South of Midnight from We Happy Few and Contrast. There’s also BioShock-style Clockwork Revolution from the makers of Wasteland.
