Cars, racing and dice. Who would have thought that such a connection, which we last saw as an expansion for Forza Horizon 4 or the two-part Lego Racers series, would return to us in absolutely refreshing and quite a good combination, i.e. LEGO 2K Drive. This arcade racing game is brought to us by the developer studio Visual Concepts, which is mainly known for sports games from 2K such as NBA basketball and wrestling. So the racing game is their first work, and even if it’s a passable title, it burns up the wasted potential and lack of appetite of a publisher who is so stepping on a brick .. well LEGA.
Although it may seem at first glance, This game is definitely not for kids.at least not for the little ones. They probably would not have been able to cope with this difficulty, at least without the help of an older brother, sister or parents. After all, the game is called LEGO 2K Drive, not LEGO Duplo 2K Drive. Some tasks are so difficult that even I, almost in my thirties, had difficulty completing them. Well, I’m a game editor, I can’t play games. Haha. There is no choice here. However, during the races you will come across difficulty classes i.e. C, B and A where A is the hardest and C is the easiest. However, you only get this choice at a higher level when the game qualifies you as an A member. However, this is not the only thing you will be doing in the game. During the study you will face various mini-gamesin which you defend bases from waves of robots or characters from clowns. You can shorten your travels with challenges in which you have to complete a given section in record time, or jump right on target as if you were an arrow. Last but not least the championship is also waiting for you, in which you will face your analogue of Shadow Z.
The style of play is similar to the Mario Kart series, but is also heavily inspired by other racing games such as the already mentioned open world Forza Horizon or even Ubisoft’s The Crew 2 and also here automatically changes the vehicle depending on the terrainwhere you are now. On the water, this is a boat, in the desert or rough terrain, an all-terrain vehicle, and on the road, road transport. This is a mechanic that would suit more racing games, at least arcade games, because you get used to it quickly, and in other games you can start to miss it. The racing model perfectly complements drifting, jumping, with which you can jump over other opponents, heart, what is the key to achieving first place and various bonuses, such as being able to temporarily stun other opponents with webs, splatter them with rainbow fire, or teleport to the front page. But you get used to the controls quickly, the races are played very well, the only negative in missions that require accuracy, such as when you mow the grass. Patience and slow driving are more effective in the end than madness. Once you do this, you will create a shortcut in that spot as the cut weeds will grow into fast growing grass. However, moving slower is harder because arcade more tuned for fast actionwhich is a shame, for example, even when viewing certain parts of the game world.
What’s rather disappointing here is building your own car, which was, to a certain extent, the main driver that just hit the spot for all of us passionate lego builders. At least on the controller, the assembly is really difficult, but if you have patience, you can. I was able to get up in 40 minutes… Well, I’m not very creative, actually. something dark and moving. The stats here are about speed, acceleration, handling, vehicle weight, and stamina, but I didn’t notice those changes while playing. Races can be won whether you use three dice or thirty. But when I got curious about what other players could build so that I could possibly be more inspired, I was very surprised. There’s nothing like viewing other players’ creations, so you can’t share your own. Forza inspiration can be found here, for example. authors they didn’t take that to some extent they partially even killed efforts for creativity. Mostly because, unfortunately, you can only use crafted cars in single player. You can show off a screenshot or video to someone, and that’s really wasted potential. Instead, you can purchase various DLCs, which brings us to the point of the poodle. And that’s Drive Pass. Instead of encouraging creativity, i.e. creating their own cars, the authors want players to buy the game at full price, an even more expensive edition that opens them. opportunity to stand out from the rest. The game has two currencies. Game and premium, paid, for which you can buy the game. In the shop you will find various vehicle skins, drivers and various flashing parts that can be used to create your dream car, that no one else can see but you.
During said build, I was reminded of Lego Racers, which also involved building your own car. At the very least, simplicity and undemanding management is exactly what I lacked here. However, assembling a car isn’t the only thing that connects the two games. Just at the beginning of the new millennium, the game offered only split screen instead of multiplayer, which was more present in the games of that time, and playing together, physically next to each other, was a lot of fun, especially when we can hurt each other and see each other’s reactions.
The split screen in LEGO 2K Drive is unfortunately not fully set up yet, and when we competed with Killer, we also remembered the timeswhen we were still playing games fifteen years ago at ten frames per second. However, once the authors fix this malaise, it can be quite fun, but we would also appreciate the ability to set the horizontal mode. The current vertical may not suit everyone.
If you are not satisfied with the information about broken split screenit won’t even save the state of the multiplayer game. 2K often crashes servers And quite hard to find teammates. A game according to SteamDB currently 100 players playand that’s just not enough. So far I have been lucky to play against at least one player, the rest of the competitors were bots. Which could be due to the wasted potential of a self-created vehicle. Creativity, originality and especially the desire to brag to other players will disappear as soon as you discover that the only one who can see your creation is yourself. However, the vehicles you create do not give you any advantage, that is, other than the appearance, which, I admit, can be quite interesting, but, let’s face it, various moving parts, such as mower teeth, do not make you faster. . So in the end it doesn’t matter if you drive the main vehicle or whatever you unlock while playing. You will move as fast as you started. Therefore, the question is whether the greed of the authors and the burying of the potential of creativity have become the reason that almost no one plays the game.
But let’s turn the page and focus on the storyline. It doesn’t matter here, and like in other racing games, you don’t even have to focus on it. On the other hand, if you pay attention to contains cute humor that won’t offend. If you’re not looking for a truly touching story, maybe you will find yourself, like me, obsessing over some silly nonsense and you admit that you really have fun. Just a B-rated family comedy. In the races, cut-scenes await during which your rivals introduce themselves, and in the game world, your team communicates with you via video call. For these side quests, you just read the text entry and the characters don’t make a single sound.
In order to progress through the story and participate in other races, you need to complete quests. You start opening them by exploring the map, which works great. You like different places where funny scenes with LEGO characters take place. While exploring, you can smash various vehicles, environments like fences, plants… pretty much everything except buildings. A little embarrassing, but understandable. However, some tasks are also important for unlocking various abilities that make shortcuts available in specific locationswhich makes the map more fun to re-driving and get different achievements.
The action takes place on four islands. You can try it while playing grassy, sandy and haunted place and on the fourth rockymostly championships.
The sad truth is that after a few hours the game starts to repeat. Races that you have already participated in should ideally be completed again in order to gain more experience and unlock more difficult tasks, i.e. the already mentioned championship. Or do you prefer multiplayer and play against… well, bots. Worse, although some tasks are more difficult, for example for example, intercept an incoming missile and deliver it to a specified location before it explodesracing in a single part is arranged in such a way that if you crash somewhere, other opponents will just start to slow down and you are almost certain that you will win.
Name first it retains the visual aspect, which is just great for a LEGO game.. Although I noticed lower texture resolution in placese.g. with rocks and other environments, but the visual side seems very pleasant. No wonder everyone in the newsroom came up to my desk to compliment it for its good looks. The sound side is tuned and believable. Musical accompaniment could be richer, on the other hand, you only need about 6 hours to finish the whole storyso it won’t bother you like that again.
On the RTX 3080 we heading went smoothlyup to the specified split screen issueshowever, when it comes to optimization, it seems that 2K is in serious trouble. No one really plays this game, but it still happened to me that at some point I could not even enter the menu. Let’s see how it goes with this game, the only one save maybe so switch to Free to play model, where paid skins and Drive Pass would make sense.
Therefore, it is difficult for me to recommend the 2K LEGO Drive to everyone. If you are not planning to play with anyone online and are going to play something, if you turn it off and enjoy the cute humor, then you will like the game. A bit more if you play it as a parent with your kids. I’ve found that if I play a game two days apart, I can still have two more hours of fun even if I’m running against bots. However, a competitive player will not be awarded a title. and while I’m not a predictor, I don’t expect the Drive Pass to become popular and save multiplayer. The authors set an aggressive pricing policy, at the same time they could make a game that, in a stream of other games, could be exceptional thanks to the LEGO style. Unfortunately, it did not happen. Oh no.
