Brno-based studio Ashborne Games has finally unveiled its upcoming game called Last Train Home. This is a real-time strategy with controls, which takes place during the First World War. However, attention is focused not on the conflict as a whole, but on the fate of the Czechoslovak legionnaires, who, after the October Revolution and the subsequent signing of a truce between the Central Powers and Russia, were stuck on the territory of the future USSR, where a civil war began between the so-called Red and White armies. The only way back home led east around the world, and that’s exactly the kind of pilgrimage we’ll experience in Last Train Home.
Although the controls already mentioned are an integral part of when you ride the train, take care of its repair and the health of your soldiers, I have not had a chance to try this segment of the game yet. However, a demo was made available at the Game Access event where the player could take on one of the combat missions.
To begin with, it is worth saying that the game looks very nice in terms of graphics. The sound design was no worse, which, of course, is another integral part of such games. However, the most important thing is, of course, the gameplay itself. The mission I had to try first took me to a nearby village past a few enemies.
I had at my disposal a small group of only 6 legionnaires. As in other games of the same genre, soldiers have different classes that differ in weapons and special abilities. An ordinary infantryman with a rifle can make a quick dash into the ranks of the enemy, a medic can heal the wounded, and a grenadier can … well, throw grenades, of course. But it must be said that grenades are perhaps too strong and easy to use, this is a very simple way to destroy the entire enemy group.
Throwing grenades is, of course, not the only possible method of attack, most of them are classic shooting. A key element in the game is cover, if you and your troops go beyond it, you risk significant losses. On the other hand, if you want to advance as quickly as possible, it is of course best to encircle the enemy units. The main mission that I had to complete was also based on this. The goal was to protect the already mentioned village, but two roads led to it. While I sent a soldier with a machine gun to protect him alone, I went with other troops to repair the bridge in order to cross the river in another way and surround the enemies.
The controls in this regard are very intuitive, and although I had a keymap at my disposal at the beginning of the demo, I hardly needed it. You can mark soldiers, create groups, choose the right action, in short, as you know from other real-time strategy games. Being able to click on an enemy and know their field of view is also a very nice feature.
But back to action. This task was not at all easy, the enemies had a significant advantage, but with good tactics and luck, I managed to defeat them. This was also due to the fact that you only need to kill the commander of a given group, the rest of the soldiers subsequently lose their will to fight and prefer to run away. Well, that’s the end of the mission and the whole demo.
Although I was only able to test a relatively short section, I was very satisfied and look forward to the final product. The theme of the Czechoslovak Legionnaires, at least for me and, I think, for many of you, is very attractive and criminally underused both in games and in movies.
Last Train Home is coming to PC later this year. In the meantime, you can add the game to your wishlist on Steam.
