Alan Wake 2 – when Resident Evil and Sherlock Holmes meet

The Alan Wake 2 marketing campaign is in full swing. After the trailer (detailed analysis here) at the PlayStation Showcase, we also got a short gameplay demo at the Summer Game Fest event. But the Play Days are hosted directly on the site in Los Angeles, and are available to select journalists for about 30 minutes of “hands-off” demonstrations. And although we don’t see the footage, we slowly get at least impressions full of new information, one such article was cited, for example, by GamesRadar magazine.

The game ran on the PlayStation 5 and, according to editor Sam Lovedige, looked very nice. After all, Remedy marketing director Thomas Puha recently he declaredthat Alan Wake 2 will be the most beautiful game of the year. So we’ll see if it actually holds up when it comes out.

The demonstration began in the woods, through which FBI agents Saga Anderson, one of the two main characters, and Alex Casey, who Alan Wake apparently “implanted” into reality, as he is the hero of his series of books, pass. As is always the case in horror films, they decide to break up, but even before that, the game gives us the opportunity to talk to Alex and find out more.

At the same time, at this stage, a rather important part of the game was revealed, which Remedy has not yet talked about – the investigation. Of course, Sam Lake has mentioned several times that we will be collecting evidence, manuscripts and other items, but Remedy goes even further. The game is similar to the palace of thought from Sherlock Holmes, but has a physical form and Saga can move around in it. It is here that the agent stores individual evidence and continues the investigation. At the same time, it is possible to recall cutscenes, re-read the previously mentioned manuscripts, or even get into other people’s thoughts and draw conclusions. In short, the detective component of this game is more significant than we have so far suspected.

Of course, she is not the only one, the developers from Remedy call the game their first survival horror game, and this is without a doubt. Ammo is more limited and enemies are a little less, it’s not as action-packed as the first. The combat system as such strongly resembles the first part, the Saga uses similar dodges and, of course, also a flashlight, with the light of which we must first destroy the dark skin of local monsters. At the end of the demo, there is a boss fight with Agent Nightingale (one of the important characters of the first part, who was supposed to be a murder victim in a duet), who should represent one of the most powerful opponents, the so-called Guardians of the Overlap, from whom we repeatedly have to suck out the darkness.

If the detective part is reminiscent of Sherlock, then the rest of the gameplay is a lot like Resident Evil. Compared to the first one, there is quite a lot of blood here, as we could already see the blood splatter from the enemies in the gameplay demo. As already mentioned, ammo is limited, but at the same time, we will also have to take care of the inventory, which is also limited in its capacity. We will no longer be treated with lamps, as in the first part, but instead Saga needs real healing, that is, pain pills, very iconic for Remedy games.

At the same time, there will be special rest rooms along the way, where the player can make a manual save, upgrade weapons (you need to find a new one along the way) or inventory. At the same time, this is the place where we can switch the character, in this case, play as Alan, but, unfortunately, this was no longer part of the demo. In these chosen locations, the character can switch at will, and to some extent the order of story sequences is determined by the player. How well this will work, we have to wait until the release of the game itself.

Alan Wake 2 releases October 17th for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
