In March 2023, after several weeks of speculation, the cancellation was announced. Electronic Entertainment Exhibition (E3). ReedPop’s new organizer, the company behind PAX, said the event simply didn’t generate enough interest or prove its impact on the gaming industry. This situation has prompted some of the companies that initially committed to attending E3, such as Ubisoft, to host their own digital events. On the other hand, most companies have decided to move their presence to Summer Games Festival.

Geoff Keighley, producer and host of the Summer Game Fest, is accused of contributing to the cancellation of this year’s E3. The organizer objects that the fair has caused the collapse by its behavior. According to him, Summer Game Fest was just a reaction to his shortcomings. Speaking on the VGC podcast, he explained his feelings about the “E3 killer” reputation and his reasons for creating his own event.
Geoff Keighley has been a huge fan of E3 ever since he witnessed the first edition in 1995 as a fifteen year old boy. Since then, he regularly attends all editions. When he saw the event going down, he startled him. He saw participation and relevance as the biggest problem in years.

However, Kaley dismisses the idea that Summer Game Fest was favored by publishers. According to him, both events were planned independently and the list of partners remained the same, despite the cancellation of E3. He stressed that he worked with publishers for several months before the festival. He never considered his event as an E3 competition. When E3 was canceled in 2020 due to the covid pandemic, that’s all he tried find a way to break the news to fans.
The following year, he was aware of less competition, but the difference was in performance. E3 wanted to achieve a large commercial scale, while Kaley focused on a live digital show.
Kaley founded Summer Game Fest in 2020, a spinoff from E3, where he previously hosted his successful live Coliseum events. He admitted that it was sad to leave E3 and build something new, but he believes that with his own event he filled in the gaps that began to appear.
