May 2023 will undoubtedly go down in the annals of gaming history in gold writing as it gave us one of the best games of all time. Initially, I thought that the amazement and enthusiasm would fade a little over time, but day by day I watch the reaction of an increasing number of players and experts who create absolutely incredible machines or inventions in the game (an automatic “orbital” laser with an airborne ground drone, for example) and analysis of an exceptionally good story, brilliant design, or technical work that defies all the rules of the industry… while watching all this, my respect for this game only grows and grows as time goes by.Play it if you haven’t already. Here I suggest review again.

May was also the first time when the traditional “pre-summer” game shows were presented, the main salvo of which, of course, will take place in the coming days, in June. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that at least some pleasant surprises await us, because this autumn looks a little contradictory so far, despite two potential blockbusters. In any case, planning for June should be given increased attention, because in addition to interesting shows, very interesting games are waiting for us, whether it be the long-awaited Diablo, the promising Final Fantasy XVI or the new invaders, which, of course, can pleasantly surprise.

May was decisive for me mainly because of the end of high school, which I finally completed successfully. However, I devoted almost the entire first half to learning, so only the last weeks remained to play. However, I played around a bit. In particular, Dredge was a very interesting indie fishing horror game that I really enjoyed. It’s very addictive and the story is really interesting. Other than that, I thoroughly went through the Burning Shores DLC for Horizon Forbidden West, where I was more disappointed with the game mechanics, but in terms of story, I’m enjoying it so far. In addition, I also have a second run of the Resident Evil 4 remake, which is excellent, but with so many new games coming out, I’m trying to limit the time I spend on it.

As for June, I’m especially looking forward to the reimagining of Layers of Fear, both for the game itself and to a large extent for technical processing, as it will be the first major game to run on Unreal Engine 5. I’m also curious about Final Fantasy XVI, I doesn’t really need an RPG genre, but the new FF caught my attention mostly because of its environment. And let’s not forget the port of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective for modern devices. This is the name of Shu Takumi, creator of my favorite Ace Attorney series. But, of course, June will also be in the spirit of game presentations, which I am also looking forward to. I’m very curious about the gameplay footage of Alan Wake 2, which is without a doubt my most anticipated game of the year so far.

Most of my playing time in May was filled with a title that isn’t graphically brilliant and is actually very simple in content: bringing confused people to light. Humanity is a puzzle game that is also a kind of metaphor for humanity and its evolution. The further you advance, the harder (unsurprisingly) the puzzles become. You have to move obstacles that stand in the way of people, run away from rolling balls, like in Indiana Jones, or move through an area full of enemies. Gradually, you will find that many of your “lemons” do not reach their destination. They sacrifice themselves so that others can succeed, such as stepping on a button that opens another path, or arming themselves with pistols and mouths to protect the oncoming crowd. Humanity was released by Enhance Games, which also features the Tetris Effect. And even in this case, the game is accompanied by pulsating music. However, this is a clear genre for those looking for puzzle games. By the way, we also talked about the game in our podcast:

In addition to him, last month I also played Lovecraftian metroidvania The Last Case of Benedict Fox, which, on the other hand, stands out for its visual side. A two-dimensional title about a young detective, literally with a demon in his body, will take you to an alternative world of limbo, in which Benedict is looking for the circumstances of the violent death of his father. Clumsy jumps or inaccurate fights annoyed me more than once, but the intricate plot and corridors compensated for this. The game does not explain much to you and requires concentration and cooperation, but it is an interesting representative of small titles that have not one fly, but many ideas.

I then completed this pair of new items with a few hours old piece, Deliver Us The Moon. I was intrigued by the history and exploration of the network of space bases on the Moon. Worse was the attempt at realism. Tasks (at least according to my observations) could be solved in only one way, and sometimes I was not sure what I was doing and why – I pressed buttons and twisted the lever “because I can”. In June, I also see how to catch up on old games that caught my attention and have been on my list for a long time. And finally, for some trips to the street.

In my case, May was mostly marked by the PlayStation Showcase event, which, despite the many games on display, failed to fully live up to my expectations. The plethora of very short trailers showed too little of individual titles in my opinion. The only notable exception in this regard was the gameplay of the new Spider-Man. While I wasn’t terribly disappointed after the event, I just expected more from what is probably the biggest PlayStation conference of the year.

In terms of games played, the most time I spent this month was TT Isle Of Man: Ride on the Edge 3, which, despite the change in the development team, managed to give me the same feelings and impressions. which made me similar to the previous two parts. It’s a shame doubly that the authors were not able to supplement high-quality content with a wider range of content and a more streamlined technical side.

The prospect until June clearly indicates that we definitely will not be bored. Despite the absence of a canceled E3, there are a number of gaming conferences ahead of us, of which I must highlight the Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward events, which will complement other traditional presentations such as the Future Games Show or the PC Games Show.

To make matters worse, several anticipated games are also being released. As a fan of racing games, I’m looking forward to the release of Codemaster’s new version of the F1 series, which will bring back the story mode. I’m also looking forward to the next installment of the MotoGP series from the Italian racing veterans at Milestone Studios. I will also follow with interest the first reaction and impressions of the horror films “Layers of Fear” and “Amnesia: Bunker”. A shooter inspired by the FEAR series, Trepang2, created by Canadian developers Trepang Studios and British publisher Team17, could be a pleasant surprise.

I didn’t upload much in May due to other commitments. First, I finished Ghostwire: Tokyo, which I loved last time, so there’s no point in repeating myself. In a word, the Tango Gameworks initiative was to my taste, and even after watching the end credits, I cannot complain about the impressions of the Japanese metropolis.

I recently played Lord of the Rings: Gollum. I won’t blurt out about the failure of the game here, I’ll just give a link to my review. Although her training was quite painful, even such a title deserves a fair assessment with all the pluses and minuses.

May Editor's Review

June is dominated by gaming conferences, demos, and announcements. If I had to name one game that stands out in the summer roster, it would certainly be Diablo 4. The beta version has already given me the opportunity to look into the dark world “as if from two sides” and I am more and more convinced that I will again plunge into the fight against demons.

May is over, which means it’s time to look back at the past days. Most of the time at the beginning of the month was occupied by Age of Wonders 4, which I periodically play to this day. However, this was not the only name that I noticed. I also got my hands on a new Zelda and I must say it’s worth it. However, on the Nintendo Switch, it’s obvious that it no longer has enough power for these games, and a better version is clearly required. I also spent my time in hell with Gollum, from which I have now traveled to Mordor in Middle-earth in the Shadow of Mordor action, looking markedly better than the new Middle-earth title.

May's review of Aliens Dark Descent cover from the editor

In June, I, undoubtedly, most of all look forward to Diablo IV, like many of my colleagues. However, this is not the only name I’m looking for. The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom definitely looks interesting too. But even more I’m looking forward to Aliens: Dark Descent, which could be an interesting tactical strategy game. However, the question is how the creators will deal with the plot and artificial intelligence. All in all, it’s like a month when I finally get some rest, which is nice because nature is calling.
