Detailed analysis of the trailer Alan Wake 2

It has long been no secret that Remedy games are connected to the so-called Remedy Connected Universe. Sometimes the connections are more obvious, sometimes less so, and it takes a little imagination to figure them out. And since there are some interesting references in the new Alan Wake 2 trailer (mainly Control), it is appropriate to write a somewhat non-standard analysis article. Some of it comes from my head, but of course, many other things have been learned by fans on social networks, for example, inside Twilight Golem or YouTube channel Hidden Machine.

Let’s start by saying one thing: Remedy is capable of taking its games incredibly far ahead. We’ve already received the first “teaser” for Control in Balance Slays’ The Demon, which was featured in Alan Wake’s 2012 American Nightmare. “It will happen again, in another city, a city called Ordinary.” This is the city where Jesse Faden, the protagonist of Control, is from.

Alan Wake 2 is no exception. As many fans will remember, we got a teaser for it back in Quantum Break 2016. The video is titled “Return”, which is also the title of the book Alan is writing to get out of The Dark Place and back into reality. Even after seven years since the release of this teaser, we can safely say that the concept has essentially remained the same. The video features Agents Alex Casey (more on him below) and Saga Anderson, who also appeared in the recently released trailer, with Saga even being a playable character. They are investigating a murder in the Bright Falls area, from the new trailer we know that the victim is Robert Nightingale, the FBI agent who pursued Alan in the first episode. Also, in the old video, we see that Alex is dying and Saga is left alone in the investigation. Whether this will be the case in the game itself is still unknown.

So who is Alex Casey? The more observant of you probably didn’t miss the fact that he was voiced by James McCaffrey and his face was provided by Sam Lake (who also played him in the Quantum Break teaser), which is exactly the same combination as Max Payne in the game . of the same name, at least in the first part. Of course, this is no coincidence, because Alex Casey is a detective character from a book series written by Alan Wake. A character that basically represents Max Payne, only with a different name. And a character that Alan Wake, like some other things, seems to have pressed into reality. We could already see a hint of this in Control, where in one document it is written about an agent named Alex Casey, who is trying to get information about events in Bright Falls. But now it has finally materialized right in the game.

As for Saga, aside from the teaser from Quantum Break, it’s a brand new character whose story we barely know. Remedy only states that she is an experienced agent capable of solving seemingly intractable cases. But the name Anderson may be familiar to you, because this is the same surname as the brothers Odin and Thor from the first part. They are members of the fictional group Old Gods of Asgard, whose name is used in the Remedy games by the Finnish band Poets of the Fall. It is not yet known if Saga has anything to do with these brothers. But even the first name hints at it. While Odin and Thor are Norse gods, the word “Saga”, originally meaning a story set in Norse history, namely the Viking expeditions, comes from the Old Norse language. In addition, Saga is also the name of a lesser-known goddess associated with the location of Sökkvabekkr, where she drinks with Odin.

For the Anderson Saga, we will play in three locations according to Remedy – the town of Bright Falls, the main location of the first part, Cauldron Lake, the fateful place of Alan Wake and, finally, the neighboring city of Watery. The last named location is probably the most interesting, on the one hand we have not yet seen it in the games, but first of all it is the place where the janitor Ahti from Control spent his holidays, as you can see on the postcard that is in the game.

It was in Watery that the “Cult of the Tree” was also supposed to develop, apparently the main antagonists of the new game. The cult is first mentioned in Control, but its circumstances remain a mystery. Double Alan Mr. To scratch? And how does the poet Thomas Zane fit into this, posing as a film director in Control and changing his uniform in the process? There are still many questions that the game itself will surely answer. But if you stick to Scandinavian mythology, the sacred tree is Yggdrasil. So, “The Cult of the Tree” is somehow connected with this name? If yes, how indicates that Dusk Golem, the name Yggdrasil was already featured in the first Maxi Payne in connection with the secret network. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but with Remedy you never know for sure.

But we are not finished with links to other games. On one of the shots while driving through New York (or his appearance in Dark Place), we can see the sign “Oceanview Hotel”, which almost certainly has something to do with the Oceanview Motel from Control. It is a place that connects separate dimensions. At the same time, we can also see a cult poster saying that some kind of “forbidden game” will take place at the Oceanview Hotel. For now, it is probably difficult to judge what exactly this means.

The second familiar object is a telephone. An important role in Control is played by the red telephone, the so-called hotline, which provides communication between the director of the FBC and the dimension of the astral plane. Although the phone in the new trailer is black, it may serve the same purpose, i.e. to communicate with another dimension.

The last scene from the trailer is also interesting, where Saga meets a man whose name he asks. He looks like a badly injured Alan Wake, but is it really him or, again, his doppelgänger Mr. Wake? To scratch? Even here we can hardly judge anything. Theoretically, we could learn more information in two weeks at the Summer Game Fest, although this is not entirely accurate. And Remedy will probably save most of the surprises for the game itself.
