Sometimes even the best idea can go awry. This is well illustrated by the actions of publishing company Prime Matter, which created the image of Shodan as part of the System Shock advertising campaign using Midjourney software that works with AI. The community did not like this move at all, so the creator was inundated with backlash. For example, one user wrote:This is not how you advertise a game made by people who are passionate about the series,“
Why Prime Matter decided to pursue this idea was presented as follows: “AI uses AI to imagine what an AI would look like in physical form (Shodan) was one of the first examples of “enemy AI” in video games (although the concept was first proposed by HAL-9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey) and the potential for AI to be smarter people is a problem experienced by many. And given today’s events at Google, it seems very timely.“
So Prim didn’t want to keep the job, but rather an attempt to bring something original to the presentation of System Shock. As a result, the company managed to attract perhaps more attention than it originally wanted. However, it is doubtful that social media users have too many reasons to be outraged, because thematically, this attempt at System Shock really fits.
AI using AI to imagine what the AI would look like in physical form; doesn’t get more meta than this… which was the purpose of starting the conversation https://t.co/A8BCkwP5V9
