XDefiant tries to shrug off Ubisoft shooter glory

Exactly one year has passed since Ubisoft cut his latest attempt at a multiplayer shooter Hyper Landscape. The game was not bad, even quite innovative, but it could not hold the player base for a long time. Now comes a new attempt, in which Ubisoft wants to bet on the best it has, namely old, well-known, established and, above all, popular brands. We were lucky to be in a new shooter XDefiant they got access to closed testing, and now we can finally share our observations!

WHO ELSE SHOULD CONFESS IN THESE REGIMES?

As one of the biggest Fortnite promoters in the Czech Republic, I was expecting to find a popular lob in XDefiant, expecting to find a hundred players and jumping on the map, which luckily didn’t happen. In the game we have a choice between PvP Hot Shot, Domination, Occupy, Escort and Zone Control modes. I myself don’t do competitive shooters anymore, so I admit that I’m a little confused about the individual modes. I got to know Escort well, it was just an evolution of pushing carts from Team Fortress 2but I wasn’t so sure about the others. Although I know the location of the dots on the map, I did not expect them to start moving in the process. Luckily, you don’t need the precise identification of individual modes at all. You will find out very easily how you are doing and what you need to do.

The basis of the game in any mode is just a completely classic shooting range and almost instant respawn, which I really missed lately. Since I die a lot and love to die in games, it really annoys me if it takes a long time to respawn, and luckily in XDefiant you can get down to business right away. Everything that I have described so far is quite normal in the field of ordinary shooters. So let’s shed some light on what makes the game different.

Following the example of popular shooters of recent years, or maybe the aforementioned Team Fortress 2, you enter the battlefield with certain heroes. In the case of this game, these will be more or less new characters, but the most interesting thing is that they come from completely different games. Including brands. XDefiant wants to actively use other Ubisoft brands and thus offers a repertoire of characters belonging to factions that you may be familiar with if, for example, you have played Division, Watch dogs or Far Cry 6. So you can run around the map as a DeadSec hacker, a Libertad fighter, or even a Third Echelon member. So yes, Ubisoft still doesn’t forget about Splinter Cell. Well… except for his own game.

GAME OF HEROES (THIS KALAMALOV)

Like I said, they are heroes. And this is in the classical modern sense of the word. Individual factions have their own special ultimate abilities that you charge during the game, as well as some passive skills. I especially liked them Purifiersthat have incendiary ammunition. Each of the five factions offers, at least in beta, two characters. Each of them has a different active skill, which subsequently changes the style of play a little. One hero Liberty he can put up a barrier, and the Cleaner can, for example, have a flamethrower drone. In addition to that, you can also choose your gear as such, following the example of Call of Duty. It includes both your primary and secondary weapons in all classic categories such as rifle, submachine gun, shotgun or machine gun, as well as a grenade. Whether it’s an explosion, EMP, or blinding.

So it’s an interesting combination of two different “genres” that actually works quite well. On the one hand, we have a shooter hero like Team Fortress 2 or Overwatch, on the other hand, something closer Call of Duty or Battlefield. And I haven’t mentioned yet that you can upgrade and then modify your weapons, which we weren’t able to test in the beta.

On the other hand, we could try to give emoticons. When you die, you can give the player a reaction from relatively positive to angry. Yes… It’s completely useless. But it amused me.

IT WAS NOT WITHOUT ERRORS

At the beginning of the video, I mentioned such a bad, ugly, really ugly thing that I unfortunately have to mention in this preview anyway. The two hours or so I was able to get into the game was somewhat painful. Even with a limited number of players, the Ubisoft servers weren’t enough and I probably spent more time trying to connect than playing. And even the beginning of the match did not mean that it was won. One match lasted just under 10 minutes, and I myself only saw the final screen three times because the server often just shut down completely. After that, it was even weirder when the game crashed completely randomly, especially at the beginning. I’m not talking about some kind of hardware inadequacy in overblown scenes. It seemed to me, for example, that for a minute the game worked fine, and then for another minute everything worked on 5 frames. This cycle was easily repeated several times.

So I have pretty mixed feelings about the game. An interesting idea with factions based on other Ubisoft games. However, I certainly don’t feel that individual ability will in any way lift me off my chair. But maybe I just haven’t played many Ubisoft shooters other than Far Cry. Given that the devs are planning on adding a new faction every three months, I’m probably just looking forward to things like Abstergo or Hashashini going forward. In any case, I ask you for a smiley face or a cloud, and for Ubisoft to keep their fingers crossed so that they can finally break the curse of multiplayer gaming.
