DOOM game series laid the foundations of the shooter and is still a role model in this genre. You could say they are praying. It’s unbelievable that ten years old gaming principles still work so well even in our time, when we see the rebirth of this brand, which attracted many young players to it. In short, the love of DOOM does not rust, and it is not surprising that in addition to consoles and computers, the series also looked at smartphones. Yes, you heard right. Mighty DOOM is a mobile game from the Alpha Dog Games studio that allows you to look into the hellish world of a famous brand even on the go. “Heresy!” Now orthodox DOOM fans are tearing their hair out. I must confess that I was also against this idea. skeptical, I would not be afraid to say even negatively. In the end, I was quite surprised by the result, and Mighty DOOM is not bad at all. So, for a mobile game.
DOOM ON THE ROADS
Alpha Dog Games replaced the proven first-person perspective with a top-down view, which I didn’t like at first, but for the purposes of a mobile game, it was the best solution to make the game as comfortable as possible. Developers they have significantly reduced even shoot, since Mighty DOOM works on the principle of “run and shoot”. So the game shoots for you, and you just go and dodge the shots or press the special attack button from time to time. In addition, Doomguy will automatically target enemies. I had a bit of a problem with this because the developers took away a lot of control over the game and after a while Mighty DOOM started to get boring for me. After all, what is DOOM without your shooting, which has always been the basis of the gameplay? This is his greatest strength. Luckily, the game tries to spice up the action on screen with roguelite elements. Your hero gains experience and levels by killing enemies, with each level allowing you to choose from three random benefits such as higher health and damage, and weapon upgrades. I found this element to be the most fun part of the game because with any luck you can make a simple rifle. fatal a killing machine that fires one bullet after another. The developers deftly work with physics, where the game allows you to shoot sideways or projectiles bounce off walls and enemies, for example. You can easily create a combination that literally turns the battlefield into an ocean of missiles when the enemies have no chance of killing you. When you die, of course you lose the benefits and you have to play the level again.
You will receive weapons typical of the DOOM series, such as a rocket launcher or a pulse rifle. Of course, the iconic chainsaw also speaks, but here it matters more. comic, when the Mini Slayer wobbles. You expand your arsenal with crates, which can be purchased with in-game currency. The plague of mobile games, i.e. microtransactions, has not bypassed DOOM either, but in this case, I did not feel that the game was pushing you towards loot boxes in any extreme way. The economy as a whole is pleasant in this regard, because you can easily earn in-game currency for upgrades and equipment just by playing, even at the cost of constantly repeating individual game chapters.
MICRO-DEALS DID NOT ESCAPE THE PAPER
But there are others that are not so popular. mobile practices like buying skins, crystals and who knows what else. The most annoying example might be energy, which has always turned me off in mobile games personally. Why do I have to pay or wait a few hours to continue playing? This is complete nonsense. And arguments like “you should rest, cell phones are bad for the eyes” do not apply to me. But, thank God, Mighty DOOM is arranged in such a way that the presence of some kind of energy did not bother me at all. This is not a game meant to be played for many hours. Instead, you sit down for ten minutes and go through the chapter once or twice, and then close the game again. At least that’s how I felt, and I think playing in small doses of the title is the most revealing.
Levels have their own system. There are thirty levels in the chapters, each of which will take you several tens of seconds. Every fifth level there is a merchant who offers you a heal or a minor attack boost. A boss fight awaits you at every tenth level. In the game you will meet the regulars of the DOOM world, be it imps, kakodemons, knights, zombies and other infernal monsters that can pleasantly flood you. The only complaint that I have in this direction is directed specifically to the bosses, which are repeated several times. I would also appreciate more variety in their attacks as their tactics are very easy to see.
Unlike the DOOM series, which has always had challenging levels that test your ability to keep moving, level design in Mighty DOOM is very minimalistic. The levels are simple, here and there you will stumble upon an obstacle, a portal or explosive barrels. But this is not enough, in my opinion. Alpha Dog could make better use of this space and play with the verticality of the levels, perhaps making them bigger and giving players more wiggle room. I’m not even talking about collecting keys and finding secrets, because they have completely disappeared from the game.
DOOMGUY IN CHILDREN’S COAT
The visuals, which are trying to get closer to modern mobile games, have also gone in the direction of minimalism. However, the childish stylization doesn’t really suit DOOM. It’s strange to play a game with low-poly models that are similar in design to pop figures and listen to a metal soundtrack with popping heads and blood splatters. It just doesn’t fit. But I understand that it’s also a way for developers to reach as wide an audience as possible.
So, in the end, does the title deserve its name? Yes, it’s still DOOM in its own way. Here we’ll find many elements from the series, whether it’s running on a motorcycle, the constant need to move, or bloody glory kills that restore some of your health. Even the enemies are nostalgic from time to time when you meet old friends from the original games, for example. However, the creators oversimplified the essence of the series and the initial excitement of the game passes very quickly. It still amazes me how many things Alpha Dog Games actually automated and made it impossible to directly control them.
I can imagine that many people will play Mighty DOOM and maybe even enjoy it. So my recommendation to you is: really think of the game only as a daily snack for a few minutes with which you relax. Do not expect complexity or thoughtfulness from her. Then you won’t get tired of Mighty DOOM. It may make a name for itself in the mobile gaming space, but it’s hard to tell how long players will be using it. Personally, I think that soon Mighty DOOM, like many other mobile games, it just fits. It does not offer anything revolutionary. And if you want to play a real, pure shooter, then it’s better to either make a mobile conversion of the original DOOM, or play directly on the computer.
Verdict
Mighty DOOM is another in a series of mediocre mobile games with nothing new. In addition, the game stripped away the tried-and-tested principles from the original games it automated, and thus took away a lot of what DOOM DOOM does from the players. However, if you just want to have fun for a few minutes, Mighty DOOM will definitely not disappoint you. But we expected more from a well-known brand.
